I would give it an 8. Lots of fun to watch, but I didn't get the feeling I got from FOTR when I left the theatres. That would have given it a 9. If it covered the whole book, then I would have given it a 10. ;)

I gave it a 6 (FotR I would have given a 7, the DVD Special Edition 8).

Why? Because it shouldn't be called The Two Towers, because it bears too little relationship to the actual story in the middle volume of Tolkein's novel. It is a great film, but it is NOT an adaptation, it is loosely (VERY loosely) inspired by it. Theoden is, after he's freed from Saruman's influence, a whining coward who hides in the hills? Faramir is a a "but for the grace of god" Boromir clone? Frodo ends up in Osgiliath, facing off a Nazgul on wings? The LAST ship leaving for Valinor? ELVES at Helmsdeep!?! The War of the Ring is about the genocide of Men?!? These last two in particular, show that Peter Jackson and co have a fundementally different interpretation of a core aspect of TLotR to what I have always understood as Tolkeins intention (and what is, IMO, in the text).

Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Fellowship of the Ring finessed a complex story in to a great film (allowing for the screw up over routes over the Misty Mountains, the silly computer game sequence in Moria and the unnescessariily radical change in Aragorn's character). But the Two Towers has taken his story too far away from his source for me to be happy with it using the same name.

Despite the Ents, and Gollum...

I gave it a 7.

I have read the books several times, and I suppose it's inevitable that I end up comparing the movie to the book. If I never read the book, I perhaps would have given it an 8 or 9. It would have to be practically flawless to get a 10.

I think PJ did a fairly good job of adapting the story to the screen. I can even accept changes that make sense in the context of the film itself. But there were some changes that just didn't work for me, Faramir and the Osgiliath sequence being the most glaring. Aragorn's "death" was another, as it was a complete fabrication and didn't really do much for the story itself. OTOH, the Arwen sequence (which a lot of people seem to dislike) I think was handled very well.

Very, very good movie. I remember sitting in the cinema thinking "this is     ing amazing!"

Seing a second time also helped a lot - made some bit a bit clearer. Bring on the extended version on DVD!

:D

-edit - im really looking forward to the marathon sessions at the Embassy once RotK is out... 9+ hours of pure goodness... yay!

G'day

I gave it a six. I found the characters of Theoden and Faramir too weak, and thought the ent thing was rushed and almost impossible to follow, while the warg attack/loss of Aragorn seemed like a pointless waste of time.

But on reflection I think that might have been too harsh. I was taking the special effects and locations for granted, and they are awe-inspiring. Gollum is unbelievable, or rather, he's utterly believable, and that's better. On the other hand the ents were only so-so, and I think the costumes are all too alike. So maybe 5 for story, 10 for production, and an overall score of 7-8.

Regards,

Agback

9.

Basically, everything perfect except -1 for Gimli's character being turned upside down from the first movie into a flat comic relief.
