Well, in fairness, I can *almost* understand having something against Knock, if you play a theif alot... *almost*. The theif, of course, can try to open a lock an infinate number of times, a wizard cannot.

That's what wands were made for. :D

The only time I took craft wands I was a rogue/wizard and the only one in the party with rogue levels so I wasn't stompin on anyones territory, but my wand of knock really came in handy. And if we did have a full rogue in the party he might feel a bit put out.

As for other utility spells... fly, and the like... I may not use vancian magic anymore, but I still want them there as an option, darnit!

What system, pray tell, are you using, then? Is it posted somewhere?

Just change Knock so it gives a +10 or +15 to the Open Locks check and move on from there. The mid level Rogue who specializes in this sort of thing will have a much higher modifier anyway so it won't be worthwhile to memorize the spell.

Don't forget that an invisible (corporeal) creature can be dectected with a Spot check DC20. That is like taking 10 on your hide check with a +10 modifier. A bit more consistent than the rogue and more bonuses when you are detected, but a devoted rogue or ranger will still make a better scout than a wizard with invisibility.

Anyways, I didn't vote. I like the magic system in general but don't like some of the specifics. I think that going low-magic just because a few spells are a bit too much in some circumstances would be throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Cheers

4 elf-lovers from boards.wizards.com ! Impressive.

I still can't understand the gripe about magic being a trump card. It's magic. You can do anything with it, unless you go real low-magic (only divinations, enchantments, and abjurations, for example).

I'm just bumping that quite a bit, because of the Mystic Theurge PrC.

I've seen several comments about how that class is overpowered that goes this way: "For a cleric, it's a fine trade-off, since they become all sucky and lame; but for a wizard it's a massive cosmical leap in overpower, and that's bad".

Enlightening.
