Your Very First Monster Encounter

While my first published adventure was X1, my older brother started me off in D&D with an encounter I'll never forget. My friend and I were just settling down to an evening around the campfire, when the log I was sitting on exploded in a burst of splinters. A very angry giant termite emerged.

Its bark was worse than its bite, though. We made short work of the nasty critter.

Rust Monster...

Sucker caught us as we were coming out of the dungeon. Lost everything in one shot.

I killed it with a sharp stick. It was kinda pathetic (both me and it...)

I'm another Keep On The Borderlands old guy. I believe my first monster encounter was with the goblins, but it may have been kobolds. I know that the ogre killed me. :D

I am sure it was not my first, but it is the only one I remember as being near the begining.

I was playing a Grey Elf (Multi-class Rogue/Mage). I had just joined my first group who had been playing a while. I was a few levels behind. we had come across a Deck of Many Things. Being very chaotic I decided to draw 3 cards.

First Card I drew got me a magic item (a +3 Long sword Defender). I was like WOW! This is great!

Next Card I drew was Death! Ack! I think I was level 5 multiclassed. So we were in the room where I was sitting and then rest of the party was there when Death showed up! There was no way I was going to hit it, so the Paladin of the group, jumped in to save my hide. In doing so the magic of the deck summoned another Death, so we had two to fight. I just ran around while he attacked them both.

With a bit of effort he was able to kill them. He yelled at my character (Stai) telling me how foolish it was to do that and that I should never to it again. I agreed.

As soon as he turned around, I drew my last card...

Boy was he pissed!

I don't remember my first monster, but I do remember casting Burning Hands at it. What I do recall is that the next time (roughly) I played, my brother DM'd my party of three 1st level characters through the new module he'd got - the Tomb of Horrors...

n00bs still get killed by kobolds....they just have 20 lvls of sorc and the vampire template with half-dragon whatsits thrown in.
Ha!

TPK by 5 Kobold's in Goodman's Dungeon Crawl Classics #2, my Mike Mearls.

"C'mon guys! They're just Kobolds!" is what they said. Then they all got whacked with multiple AOOs as they rushed into the room, past the gauntlet of kobolds. The Kobold/Sor 2 with the wand finished them off. And these were veterans. Of course they were new to 3E. They still thinkg they were uber-jacked-up-on-steroid kobolds.

As for my first monster, I think it was the barkeep in the obligatory tavern, while seeking out rumors.....

Second or third session of a homebrew campaign. I was playing a 3.0e druid, and the DM decided to let me shine a bit by throwing 5-7 wild boars at our 1st level party. I took out most of 'em in the first round with Calm Animals - not very impressive, I guess, except to someone like me who'd only been gaming for a few weeks. Great way to draw in newbies! :D

A beholder. This is during 0ed DnD. I'd joined an ongoing campaign when all of the suuden we turn a corner and this floating ball full of eye stalks appears. all the other guys in the goup run away and I decide to charge. Luckily this was with a DM who liked to have his cool NPC be way cooler than the PCs, so his Wolverine Look alike shredded the beholder into bits befoer i Got to do anything. Afetrwards the otehr guys explained the general nastiness involved with the Beholder. When I'd been shown the picture all I could think was....I'm gonna pop that balloon..:D
