Your Very First Monster Encounter

The first monster I ever fought would probably be the ones in that solo game in the red boxed set. So, I can vividly recall losing all my stuff to that rust monster. That DAMNED Rust monster! I always hated that thing.

I think there were rats in there, and some skeletons, and maybe an ooze. I'm not entirely sure.

The first game I ever played was Basic with some friends in 5th grade (1983?), and all I really remember was that I played a thief. I don't recall fighting anything.

Many years later, I joined a group in high school who played 1e, and I think the actual first monster we fought was a hill giant. I can't help but think we were 1st level, or maybe 2nd, but we had a large party, so we managed to kill it. Maybe it was an ogre, but I seem to remember it as being a hill giant.
I was a drow acrobat.

Boy that was a looooong time ago. We were playing Basic D&D at the time. I think the first monster encounter was with some goblins. If I recall, I was playing a wizard named Aragorn. I loved Gandalf, but thought Aragorn sounded better. Ah to be 12 again.

Ours was a mountain lion. I think it nearly killed someone, then escaped out of the dungeon.

White box set, first-time player, solo adventure, playing a 1st-level wizard with one magic missile spell and a dagger. Ran into ghouls (or wights - memory's the first thing to go...) but I remember there was more than one.

Cast my spell. Didn't help much. Ran away. Foolishly ran down a passage that I hadn't yet explored. Fell in pit. Died when the monsters caught up with me. After that, I was hooked...

Well? What was it?

My first monster was a one-shot with a friend of mine. I got triple-critted by a frickin' kobold. Now I'm sending my players up against draconic kobold hordes. Everyone loves kobolds.

Can't remember, really. I guess it depends on how you view things. I remember playing a crappy MERP game and facing bandits. I remember my first pen&paper AD&D PC, a halfling thief, facing also bandits. And then I remember Dyvnal Khaldam, my first actually roleplayed PC, meeting a drow elf PC named Drinlith. They never fought, but Drinlith threatened to eat him, before going on his way, leaving the poor half-elf scared witless by the roadside.

Dyvnal later went on to kill some goblins in a nearby forest. So, I guess his first monster encounter was goblins.

My first real monster was a tiny Centipede. My 16 Str, 16 Int Half-Orc wizard smashed it to a pulp with his quarterstaff.
