Your Very First Monster Encounter

I just wanted to see what everyone's first monster encountered in D&D was. Mine was a Carrion Crawler who was hiding in the shadows above the entrance to a scratch build dungeon. We saw something up there and poked it with our 10' pole :) . It dropped down and attacked. Don't remember the fight after that though one of us (there where two players and a DM) got paralysed!

Hmmmm....

First experience was good old Keep on the Borderlands. Fought the hermit and the usual humanoids...and I think the first real beastie we ran into was the Minotaur. I remember being shown the fantastic old Erol Otus pic, deciding we had no chance, and running away. :)

We did go back at a later point, our confidence regained by the wholesale slaughter of bandits and such....

IIRC it was a Bullywug. My first adventure was a solo player and the DM. I encountered a Bullywug on the edge of a swamp and was frightful that it was going to be rather powerful.

Well...since I DM most of the time, my first monster encounter was throwing a group of Kobolds at the PCs. They did well against the Kobolds...but one survived. One always survives! Bwahaha!

I like Kobolds far too much...;)

First, when I read the post, I thought, if I really reply, that I played Keep on the Borderlands (just after it appeared, I think) I will be laughed at as grandpa :)

My first experience was also in keep on the borderlands, fighting goblins.
(this must have been round 1980s somewhere...).
We found a weapons chamber which was really wonderfull and we had a very, very hard time with the ogre :D

I'm afraid my ability to read cuneiform has gotten rusty ...

Somewhere back in the mists of time there was a "first monster" for me in D&D, but that is a long, long time ago and, I am afraid, the records are rather dim

i think it was a giant rat from Booklet III The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures

a random homemade dungeon....as they didn't have modules yet available. ;)

followed soon after by a skeleton.
