Your Very First Monster Encounter

First game, first monster. The party rogue falls into a pit trying to search for it, and the cleric and I (a mage) are stuck down there too, trying to get him concious. Then we hear footsteps. Heavy footsteps. Four bugbears come to the edge of the pit, look down, and start shooting.

Man that was fun. Barely got out alive.

Demiurge out.

Back in the days of the little white books (circa 76) my very first character, a wizard, wandered into a tower that he shouldn't have, he was with a fighter (who was being played by another newbie). A statue animated and my buddy grabbed a spear that was lying around and threw it. It was a cursed back biter and he did more than enough to himself to kill himself. I ran out of the tower looked up to see a face looking down at me and magic missiled it, the lightning bolt I took in return was more than enough to obliterate my 2 hit points. Total time invested 1 hour (15 minutes rules explaination, 15 minutes character generation and 30 minutes playing). Man was I hooked!!!!!

interestingly I almost never play a wizard....I'm sure there is no connection

wow... so many people with the same experience. Well, put my name down on the old fart/Keep on the Borderlands kobold list. I remember perfectly well that I was running a half elven fighter/thief, so naturally, I got stuck in the rear of the party. Good thing too, since everyone else fell into the pit (I was just far enough behind to stay out of it). There I was, one lonely half elf with 7 hp in a cavern fulla kobolds. Well, to make a long story short, I totally abused the 'hide in shadow' ability to sneak around the caverns and find the frickin' lever to let the rest of the party out... then we all took our horrible bloody revenge on those little stinkers....

The Peanuts Gang reminisces about D&D:
Lucy: My first time out, my DM sent a kobold after me!
Sally: I got a goblin!
Schroeder: I got a giant rat!
Charlie Brown: I got a Roc.

I think my first monster I ever fought (in an 1st edition AD&D game) was a group of orcs, and the party had to save me from them. The first PC I ever made to play, my 1st level Fighter/Magic-user/Cleric was the most useless character ever created, because I never rolled over a 10 with that darned d20.

And trust me, it WASN'T the old type that went "0 through 9" twice. I was just that bad.

when i was twelve it was me two other players and the first monster was an owl bear. It managed to almost kill the entire party until a few lucky crits by me and the ranger in the party

Have you ever come across a Dire Kobold? What do you think of them? They can be very nasty and could be something you might be interested in if you like kobolds and destroying PC's so much. :D

You like Kobolds?
Me and my players loved Dragon Mountain.
I even converted it to 3.0 - it was really fun :)

Carrion Crawler in the red boxed set basic DnD, and my Bullywug collectables!

Yep same here. In that little adventure you meet a female cleric... it was years before i could even think of a cleric as none female.

My first monster encounter was with 2 goblins I think in first edition (although I think second editon was already out). Don't remember any details. The game stopped shortly and I did not gain intrest in the game until near the end of second editon when I started playing for real and never gave up the hobby again.
