You're approached by a Hollywood exec...

Tarzan has, until relatively recently, been cyclical in the public eye. Apparently Sony now has the rights and is planning on having another go at the character.

Like John Carter, Tarzan's stories influenced more than just genre fiction. Will ERB's stories have their time in the sun again? Maybe, maybe not. Nosferatu is a remake of a film 100 years old, and was one of the biggest box office successes of 2024.
The Asylum, that noted purveyor of high quality movies, did a remake of Land that Time Forgot, which was surprisingly not too bad, and compared well to the Hammer version.

Monarch on Apple+ is quite Pelucidar.

Ah, yes. One of their many movies starring C. Thomas Howell.

Tarzan might be a bit of a tough sell in the current social climate - certain aspects of the character and the world he lives in will undoubtedly get tarred with the "problematic" brush, even if they completely change the tone of the setting...

I quite like Monarch...until you said something, I didn't think of the Pellucidar connection, but yeah, it's totally got a bit of that in its DNA.

There are definitely some inherently problematic elements of Tarzan. Not sure what Sony is thinking on their approach, but we shall see (if the project ever comes to fruition - it could languish like so many optioned properties).

The big one is the “White Saviour” thing. They could cast someone who isn’t white?

That was my thought. Doesn't have to be White to come from a privileged English family, though some would balk at the name Lord Greystoke.
I think a bigger problem might be trading the white savior trope for a noble savage one.
