You're the Head of WOTC. Now What?

I'd take a look at the finacials and see how the comapny is doing. I'd look at the different items we do that have succeeded and failed and go from there. I would be running a business so the choices I make would be based on that and not on my fanboy love of the games they make.
This.

In addition, many CEO's of companies that are divisions of larger corporations have surprisingly little influence over their own products. Any change often requires approval from above (e.g. Hasbro) who also requires approval from its board of directors.

Actually, I think they are doing a pretty good job. I wish their future endeavors weren't so secretive. It would be nice to know what they had planned for the brand further than 1 year away, as well as what they intend to do with their idle IP (Dragonlance;)) 4E may not be the perfect RPG, but I've hitched my horse to its wagon and it would be nice to know where we are headed. . .

Indeed. If anyone of use became head of WOTC, chances are we mess it up. The position that most of use would really want is that of head designer or something like that.

Simply put, there is not enough information publically available to answer this question satisfactorily.

I would strongly consider what non-RPG games I could market that would have the appeal of Magic: The Gathering in its early days. Whatever the next big fad is, I'd want to be riding the wave.

I know that the early WotC market survey showed that people who buy minis spend way more than those who don't, but I don't think that automatically means tying the game system into mini purchasing is a wise idea. It might just mean that you sell fewer games. I'd have to see their numbers to know.

I am almost 100% certain that I would go back to pdf sales. It makes no sense to me to have pdf magazines while claiming that pdfs are a problem. And the no-pdf rule has done nothing (AFAICT) to reduce copyright infringement. That seems obvious, although there might be a deeper reason I am not seeing to keep pdfs off the market....?

I would also have to get used to making decisions that weren't good for the hobby, because they were good for the company. That is, sadly, reality.

There probably isn't much the WotC CEO can do to impose their will and drastically change how things are done at WotC, unless they are also a large significant shareholder in Hasbro stock.

According to a list of Hasbro's largest shareholders, Greg Leeds isn't on that list.

The person who exactly calls the shots at Hasbro concerning WotC, and who has veto power over everybody else, is the job some rpg gamers would probably want.

1. Put everything ever produced (that isn't copyrighted by someone else) up in low-cost PDFs.

2. Keep the DDI functional; the infrastructure and tools are probably self-sustaining at this point.

3. Keep the forthcoming Essentials line and other evergreen products in print.

4. Cease development of new D&D products.

Keep the old stuff available, maintain the DDI tools and the GSL for 4E supplements, and exploit the IP for other uses--but essentially, kill 'official' D&D and leave it to the fans and the third parties.

Maybe we can finally stop the edition wars then.

;)

I would mainly make small corrections: find a way to publish all .pdfs again, push the Brand into other media a lot (D&D cookbooks, mobile games, more comic books and computer games). Revise the Wotc forums - they´re getting better but are still badly organized.

Otherwise, i think they are on the right track.

You stay the course.

4E is successful.
I don't think it is nearly *as successful* as some would have us believe....
But it is by any measure successful. The DDI alone is making a nice steady flow of revenue.

Changing things now would be a major mistake. You must stick with 4E for AT LEAST a couple more years.

You can't unsplit the market at this point, and any major change would disrupt current success and the only result would be a huge loss of confidence in what fans you have that you will remain supportive of them for any reasonable time.

On second thought knowing that I'm not qualified and wouldn't last long I'd set up a ncie golden parachet for when they canned me. :D
