You've all converted me...

I can't help it anymore...I've become a serious D&D addict.

I scour message boards for interesting issues and events, read about rules that I'm not even using, and look for great stories in the story hour section. I've been converted.

I play NWN like it's my job.

Here's my issue though.

Currently I've been DM'ing a game that uses an entirely different system than D20. It's a quick and easy system based on D10 rolls.

Now I want to go to a rules heavy system that uses all different kinds of dice.

Is it hard to make the switch?

How long should I give myself to learn the rules before I gather my group and we start to play?

Any suggestions?

I'm leaning towards using Midnight as my campaign world.

I'm not worried too much about story I'm pretty good with that. What I am worried about though is that it takes me 5 minutes tops to make an npc for my current game. I think I'm goign to be increasing my work load immensley by going to D&D.

What's a normal prep time for any of you DM's out there?

Oh, and one more thing.

This site rocks!

Thanks in advance.

making NPCs in 3e took me a while (when I switched from 2e D&D). But now I can do it in 5 minutes or less -- depending on the amount of detail. So really it goes back to "practice makes perfect" :)

Whenever you switch over, it's going to take time to adjust. I'd say before you switch over the whole game, start by making some of your NPCs and all ahead of time to give yourself a base familiarity and such...

Haven't gotten to DM a 3.5 game in quite a long while so I can't say what my typical prep time is ...

Hi Swan,
I think the best advice as far as how to go about starting to play would be to take advantage of an ENWorld game day in your area. The caliber of people in general, and GM's in particular is spectacular. Playing in one or two D20 games (D&D or otherwise) will give you a decent grounding so far as rules go.

If there are no game days in your area, the next choice would be to attend a local convention to get a couple of games under your belt. It would serve the same purpose as attending a game day, and the quality of games is still generally good.

If neither of these options is possible, plan a one shot D&D adventure, or download a free adventure to run as a break from your regular game. Once you have read the rules, the next step is to just dive right in. By running a one off you will not mess with your regular game.

Welcome to the fold, next we need to convert you to D20 Modern!

We've converted him! The internet brainwashing techniques work! Now, Black_Swan, repeat after me, "My name is Tordek."

Good choice!

May I suggest wandering over to the boards at the Midnight fansite, www.againsttheshadow.org, where you will find a lot of people who will help you out with suggestions etc... for your Midnight campaign.

AtS also hosts a stack of fan material for the Midnight world that you might find helpful.

Cheers
D

Nice job Der. Course I think my alternate Sage self/pimp daddy Ash could have done better. ;) Kidding!

Actually, we're playing this "good cop/bad cop"-style so I'm sure he will turn up soon to play his part. :)

Anyway, and I'm sure Ash will agree, it's time you converted to the wonders of FFG. Say, "Midnight, Grimm and Dawnforge" after me....

Der,

You can convert everyone else BUT me my friend. :) I've seen all three and while they are good, I will not give up on the Scarred Lands until I'm dead and buried. And maybe not even then! ;)
