Session 89c - Fallout @ HQ

The fallout from the mission was as follows:

  • Damage to the Kell Guild sufficient to merit a 'strike'.
  • Unit B deemed a target for guild reprisal and taken off the case for the time being.
  • Despite the success of the mission, Theren Silverspire's leadership came into question. With a team member and an officer lost, and his own life in serious jeopardy, Stover Delft and Dima felt that he was not best suited for leading urban missions. For the time being, Professor Marcione would lead the team, though Theren's rank was maintained.
  • The release of Azure Lord Blackthorn had several ramifications: First and foremost, he was able to point to identify Lorcan Kell as the man who had assaulted him, amputated his wings and transported him to Lepage's illegal pixie farm. This news was greeted with excitement by the RHC hierarchy and seemed to set some well-oiled wheels in motion. Alpha Unit was now put in charge of a squad of sixty men and tasked with bringing down Lorcan Kell and his criminal empire. But secondary questions persisted, and Blackthorn's account appeared to implicate members of Alpha Unit in an attempted murder conspiracy...

One final important event occurred a few days after the mission. The unit arrived at HQ to find the staff ashen faced were quickly ushered into their office, where they found Sevitar Anrathi sitting on his chair in the corner, arms folded. When they entered he stood and greeted them as if nothing had happened, although he expressed surprise that his return from the Bleak Gate 'had been a lot easier than last time'.

(Later, the Professor read Sevitar's file and learned some important information about him. Sevitar was an 'agent of the crown' long before the establishment of the RHC, who - along with his team - had pursued an evil necromancer into the Bleak Gate near Cauldron Hill and disappeared. That was fifty years ago...)

DM's Note: This all took place around the beginning of 'week 10' of the downtime scenario, just a day after the Dawn Square Rally. (For clarity, that is week 12 of Winter, and the last week of the year 500 AOV.)

Our next session - be that next week or whenever it happens - will start on 8th Spring 501 AOV, with unit A meeting King Aodhan. I plan to detail what happened at the rally, and during the next two weeks (since unit A's last session where they stopped Rumdoom opening a portal for the Deep Ones) in flashback, though the players will still be offered choices about what they did in that time.

If my wife gives birth before then, this first session of Cauldron Born will occur whenever normal service resumes, otherwise it will serve to whet the players' appetites.

Hiatuses can be stressful for games, but not nearly as stressful as not getting sleep for a year with a newborn around. Good luck on both fronts.

(Also, "illegal pixie farm" is frikkin' weird.)

That's what everyone keeps telling me. So how long the hiatus is remains to be seen. Thanks, though.

(Also, "illegal pixie farm" is frikkin' weird.)

Originally I was just going to have Lord Blackthorn kept as a kind of pet. Then I improvised the pixie dust thing during the raid on the brothel (because I'd already said that brothels weren't illegal per ce, so there had to be something untoward for Niniel to uncover) and fey pepper didn't fit the bill (cos it's not illegal either) and the two ideas got joined together. My players were quite freaked out by it.

Session 90a - Cauldron Born - In Media Res

Set-up: To kick off Cauldron Born, I took In Media Res very much at face value. The last time we saw Alpha Unit (Korrigan, et al) they had just prevented a Deep One controlled Rumdoom from opening a portal that would drown Flint. At the end of that session, Korrigan and Matunaaga dashed off to Dawn Square for a rally that would determine the success or failure of their ten-week skill challenge to prevent the launch of a mercenary fleet. We broke for the summer, and when we returned, rather than address this cliffhanger, we instead followed Unit B for four weeks, to bring their adventures up-to-date. So when the players were told to bring their Unit A character sheets this week, the last thing they expected was for me to lay out some street map tiles and tell them to roll initiative.

As I laid out the tile and minis, information about what was going on gradually filtered through: They were in a carriage that was filled with poison, ploughing along the road out of control; moments ago their driver was killed seconds after he shouted a warning about danger up ahead (his eyes pecked out by crows, cos I thought that was cooler). Unbidden, their horses had swerved to avoid a potential collision; shots had been fired. But the royal horses were noble beasts, and had not been felled as their assailants intended. (Players eyes widened at ‘royal horses’.)

What now?

At this point I told them, very succinctly, that it was the 8th of Spring 501 AOV, two weeks after the rally in Dawn Square, and they were headed through the streets in a carriage sent by Stover Delft to take them to Hotel Aurum – venue for the forthcoming peace-talks – where they were due to meet with the King. Frisson of excitement – back to the action.

I had initially planned to play this encounter out without miniatures, but changed my mind at the last minute. To keep things dynamic, I made the players’ carriage static, moving the Kell Guild carriages forward each round, picking up any vacated tiles and placing them in front of the players’ carriage. To make the encounter even more challenging I added obstacles – crowds of people, market stalls, wagons, a busy square – to the road ahead, but these obstacles moved towards the player’s carriage as well (at a rate that depended on their speed).

Combat: This encounter ran surprisingly smoothly and was a lovely example of players using their skills and abilities to best effect. There were only four players – Korrigan, Malthusius, Matunaaga and Uru. Malthusius went first, and threw open a carriage door only to find the poison was too thick to disperse immediately. With his bracers of mental might he swung out (one-armed, having lost the other to Lya Jierre) and clambered into the driver’s seat, where he found himself beset by ghoulish crows. Selflessly, he dropped an area burst on the crows to slow them, which included himself but missed. (At the end of their turn the crows would now drop away from the royal carriage instead of keeping pace with it.) Not wishing to be outdone, Matunaaga telekinetically flew onto the roof of the carriage. Unaware of the crows, he was intending to shoot at the pursuers, but instead lashed out at the undead birds in a flurry of fists and feet. Uru was next, and outdid even Matunaaga, by using his connection with the Bleak Gate to teleport through the roof of the carriage, where he attacked the crows with his shuriken crossbow, just before they dropped away. (He scored a crit, and although the damage was halved, the crows were now clinging on with just a few HPs.) Korrigan clambered out of the carriage with slightly less aplomb than the other three, ordered Matunaaga to fire at their pursuers, and yelled at a crowd up ahead to get out of their way.

By this time the technologists had fired their time-bombs – a lovely device to help ratchet up the tension - and the pursuing carriages had gained, with Rufus Hammerton urging them on, anxious not to fail Kell. Uru was able to identify him, and the unit realised it would be useful to take him alive. Unfortunately, Matunaaga then blew his head clean off (a crit with a high-powered Drakran rifle using sure shot). Rufus tumbled from the carriage.

Up ahead, another throng of people could be seen, and beyond a busy market square. Malthusius pulled on the reins, while Korrigan used his canary-in-a-coalmine pendant to fly onto the closest carriage, and raised an earthen wall across the road in front of the last carriage with his icon of urim pendant. The carriage crashed, killing the musketeers and sending the second technologist sprawling. The closest carriage pulled up alongside theirs as it slowed; Korrigan grabbed the reins to stop it ploughing into the crowds, while Matunaaga leapt across and dropped the first technologist who – in desperation - had already fired another time-bomb just in front of where he was standing.

Uru couldn’t get the ticking bombs defused in time and shouted as much to the others before fleeing towards the square. Matunaaga and Korrigan followed close behind, but Malthusius, having brought the carriage to a safe halt, was dawdling. Korrigan shouted at him to get a move on (playing knight’s move), and he leapt out of the way seconds before the bombs exploded (avoiding 20d6 damage – never in our campaign has knight’s move been put to better use).

Police arrived to secure the scene, arrest the surviving guild members and provide the unit with a tight escort the rest of the way to Hotel Aurum.

DM’s Note: A fantastic, fast-paced and unorthodox start to the next instalment of the campaign proper, and a great way to kick off a very info-packed session indeed...

I've read your story from session 1 all the way to the current one. I always find myself looking forward to the next session. Great inspiration for when I run my game once we finish TSAD.

I have to say this last post is incredible! The tension must have been intense. I hope to be able to emulate it when I eventually run my campaign. Keep up the great work!

Thanks very much. That's really good to know. I've run a lot of campaigns over the years, but this is the first time I've ever posted session reports online. My main reason for doing so was that I had found other DMs' reports (for previous campaigns) immensely helpful myself, so your response is particularly gratifying.

Thanks again - but the real credit goes to Thurston Hillman and Ryan Nock.

Session 90b - Recap

Recap: So what had the unit been up to these last two weeks that brought them to this point? (I’m focusing here only on those characters whose stories were touched on extensively.)

Korrigan – Dashed with Matunaaga to the rally. They were stopped at one of the entrance points to Dawn Square by some of the huge number of minders working for Rackus: they saw weapons and wanted to know who the pair were. It was an easy matter to establish that they were the ones who had invited Rackus to play in the first place, but the high level of security got the pair thinking. How much thought had they put into that themselves?

The show went ahead. Rackus put on a raucus, crowd-pleasing display, which saw many middle-class and refined folk leave the square in outrage. Rackus’ Grumbler-inspired lyrics won over the working man, though. While he played, Matunaaga put on an incredible display, shaolin-monk style, which was followed by fireworks. (In truth, however, Matunaaga being not much of a showman, the people at the front, who had a great view, were suitably impressed. Those at the back wondered what the hold-up was and ate their packed lunches.)

Now it was time for the political speeches. A few members of the anti-Fleet coterie went first, then Korrigan was introduced by Deneric Jayce.

(Having played his Way With Words card) Korrigan aced his address to the people of Flint. It was designed to get across quite a subtle message, and convince them that, while Korrigan and his political allies were opposed to allowing individuals to wield great military power in the way that Pemberton Industries and Black Star Mining sought to do, they were in no way inimical to progress or to private enterprise. To win back support from the Dockers – compromised when he backed the wealthy residents of the Ayres in their campaign for a mayor – Korrigan was also at pains to stress how his vision for the future embraced their interests too: ensuring jobs for the workers while limiting the scope of corporations. He painted a vision of the future in which the Old Faith had a hand moulding progress, instead of keeping it at arm’s length – helping to make the city cleaner and safer. Inspired by the book on Triegenes, he talked of rising to meet the challenge of the new age.

Here’s an extract (written by the player on a scrap of paper during our last session before the summer):

“Some say we are opposed to progress and private enterprise. Others might argue that we are ignoring the interests of the ordinary man.

“We are standing on the crossroads and the future is becoming? Which path do we choose? The one of strife? Of exploitation? Where the Old Faith is set against science? Or the one in which the new inventions serve everyone? Where all people can live in peace and prosper together! We need to make a choice about what future we will live in! And we need to speak out and let our will be known. To step forward on this path and boldly greet the spirit of our age!”

At the end of the speech, the crowd burst into rapturous applause, which masked the report of the sniper rifle, perched on one of the distant, unpatrolled buildings that nudged up against the square. A bullet struck Korrigan square in the chest.

Fortunately, Korrigan had manifested cindersoul shortly before stepping up on stage. His roiling magma body absorbed the projectile in an instant. The shot caused Korrigan to stagger and cough, but no more. No one but he and Matunaaga even noticed and the rally ended in triumph (although Korrigan’s exit from the stage was more of a hustle than a saunter).

Skill Challenge: The impact of the rally on the skill challenge was significant, causing the unit to succeed in not only the public sphere, but also the political one – public opinion nudging those mayors who had been hesitant into supporting Deneric Jayce’s motion to condemn the mercenary fleet. Unfortunately, the unit had not done enough to succeed in delaying the launch of the fleet, which meant that – sensing the adverse political wind – Benedict Pemberton was able to order its launch before it could be sanctioned by the government of Flint. At the same time, he withdrew funding from businesses, factories and projects throughout Risur, in accordance with the threats he had made in Slate. This included his funding for the RHC…

The unit later found themselves meeting merfolk emissary Helpolol at the governor’s mansion (where they also encountered their erstwhile ally Azure Lord Blackthorn – more of which some other time). Helpolol was disappointed that the mercenary fleet had not been scuppered entirely, but had to accept that the unit had done all they could. It was also no small matter that the fleet would not fly under the Risuri banner, nor be welcome in any Risuri port.

Rumdoom: For safety and certainty, having secured Karl Krauss’ compound (calling in Sebastian Harlock of the Battalion to debrief the dominated citizens, impound the expansible portal, and quarantine Rumdoom), Uru, Leon and Malthusius went to consult Isaac, Mayor of the Nettles. Isaac had already been working on what he called a ‘mind-cleansing machine’, aimed at ridding Xambria of her possession by Ashima Shimtu. (Xambria was currently ‘locked’ into a recess of Malthusius’ mind where she could do no harm.) Isaac felt confident that the device could be used to ensure Rumdoom was also free of pernicious influence, and wondered if perhaps the whole unit might like to be run through the machine to check that no issues persisted (given that all of them had been tempted in the Vault, and no less than two of them had been possessed in as many months…) Uru was suspicious, and agreed (along with the others) so long as Isaac subjected himself to the device first! Isaac was somewhat offended and in any case told the team that the device was not ready and that he would get in touch with them when it came to fruition.

Rumdoom recovered consciousness under the watchful eye of the Battalion specialists and was given the all-clear within a few days. He then returned to the clap-board meeting house in Bosum Strand. On the way, there were horrified, fearful gazes from the dwarves who recognised him and when he reached the meeting house a hostile crowd had gathered. They thought that he had been in on the whole sordid affair – the theft of funds and Harn’s murder: after all, had he not disappeared on the same day as Azon, Thered, Thangir and Kvarty?

His protestations of innocence (and his inexplicable return) soon convinced them otherwise, but the impact of the events remained profound. Poor Khoomrung Morkanstall’s health had worsened when his restoration did not occur, and by now he was at death’s door. One of the congregation gently mentioned Hildegaard, Harn’s daughter, who had been a staunch supporter of Rumdoom in the past. Had he been to see her? Had anyone seen much of her since the dreadful day in question?

Rumdoom was shaken. He could not bring himself to visit Hildegaard, but went instead to RHC HQ where the job could take his mind of personal matters, and perhaps provide clues as to the whereabouts of Azon. It preyed on his mind to realise that, while he might be invincible, those around him remained vulnerable to harm, just like poor Moraga, his late, lamented sweetheart.

But when Rumdoom arrived, he was not admitted to the building. His status was suspended mending an enquiry. He went home to cool his heels, and be alone with his gloomy thoughts.

Malthusius: Recently, the old deva had developed a new means of interacting with spirits that he had named location loresight. It allowed him to pick up large-scale visions and images associated with specific places. He returned to the burned out theatre where Andrei Recklinghausen was abducted and entered a trance-like state.

[Expecting Wolfgang von Recklinghausen, the Obscurati sent along Norm (his contact), Nicodemus (to persuade Wolfgang to join through sheer charisma) and – because Wolfgang is no slouch – two combatants, whose description was inspired by the image from the cover of the forthcoming heroic tier hardback edition. Realising something was amiss, Nicodemus gave orders for them to take down Andrei, and – unwilling to take chances – called for back-up. My idea is that Governor Stanfield teleported in. This is a little outré I know, but I figured he’d be in contact with Nicodemus and that he can go anywhere he wants to in Flint, such is his connection with the city. I threw Stanfield in because when Malthusius peformed a simple object loresight at the location a few sessions ago, I told him that ‘a tiger had taken Andrei’. If any of this causes problems, I’ll change it.]

Malthusius witnessed the scene as the four individuals waiting for Wolfgang were surprised by Andrei instead. There was a stand-off (Andrei was expecting to find Wolfgang too) and by their postures, it seemed that hostilities were likely. Malthusius saw: a smartly dressed man in a stove-pipe hat, reaching into coat for a weapon; a brightly coloured female sprite; a non-descript man with centre-parted hair looking nervous at the prospect of conflict; and a shabbily dressed tramp, casually smoking a cigarette. Malthusius immediately recognised the latter as a rough-sleeper he had questioned once before. He tracked him down in the Parity Lake district and learned that the man had no recollection of these events. He did, however, remember the man with centre-parted hair when Malthusius described him. He said he had called himself ‘Norm’, offered to buy him a drink, and then jabbed something into his arm. A quick inspection revealed a red mark there, but no further evidence.

Full recap: This part of the session did not bring the unit fully up-to-date, as I wanted to wait until the mini-game was explained before I went into further detail. So we’ll be looking at what else happened in the last two weeks at some point during the next session. Confused? Me too.

You have a lots of plots going on, but I think I'm keeping up.

I don't think your Stanfield scenario causes any problems, though I don't think I'll put the 'teleport anywhere in the city' in as canon. Maybe it's a ritual, takes a few minutes, and he can only go to spots that are public or unclaimed (i.e., they belong to Flint, not to any particular person)?
