Session 207, Part One

Global Threats

At Torfeld Palace, Principal Minister Harkover Lee, Viscount Nigel Price-Hill, Duchess Ethelyn of Shale, Lauryn Cyneburg and other senior royal advisors gather to detail and discuss the various international threats posed in the light of the ‘Forward Symposium’. They have prepared a Risuri National Defense document, which they present to the king.

Harkover highlights the report on each army’s “heroic dangers,” and clarifies that they’re so named because they will kill people who are too heroic. He waxes nostalgic about Queen Hibiscus of the Argent Rampant, who provoked the First Yerasol War when she – and allies from a military company she had served in before taking the crown(hint, hint) – teleported to a Danoran shipyard in the Yerasol Archipelago, intending to raze it and claim the island. Instead, she discovered Danor’s secret weapon – firedust – when she set off a lightning bolt in a ship’s magazine. The story only came out a decade later after one of her allies was retrieved in a prisoner exchange. The queen had warded herself and her group with layers of defense against arrows and tiefling fire, and grew overconfident in her supposed invulnerability.

They note flaws in the plans of the Ob. It does not appear that they have taken the allied titans into account. Questions are raised about the disposition and location of the gathering armies, but it is unclear if they have even begun to gather as yet. There is some brash talk about taking the fight to the enemy before Harkover counsels caution: he is heartened by reports of what happened in Cherage and wonders if – in this more rational age – good deeds and reason might be used to sway hostile populations. Which brings him to their Beran guest: should they meet her here (in the war room), or in the main audience chamber?

They reconvene in the royal throne room and Harkover ushers into the chamber Mysana del Salvatia, an orc executore dola liberta. She is missing an arm below the elbow, which she had to amputate after a snakebite she suffered in the High Bayou. (She had magic to neutralize the first poison’s bite, but there were a lot of snakes.) Though exhausted, she still proudly wears the broken chain badge of her office.

Mysana explains that she hiked from Ber and has been in occasional contact with Glaucia Evora, who is the highest rank executore left. Her information is limited because of the brevity of sendings, but Glaucia suspects the Obscurati conspiracy is active in the western city of Ursaliña, which has had no contact with the outside world for several weeks. Glaucia could provide more information if the unit agreed to meet her in Seobriga, at Palacio Justicia de los Huesos del Tirania Widoreva (the courthouse which holds the bones of the dead dragon tyrant Widoreva).

While the fate of a single city may not interest the party, Glaucia has told Mysana that proof of hostile Obscurati acts against Ber would let her pressure the Bruse to postpone or even cancel his army’s invasion of Risur.

They thank Mysana, order that the means be found to regrow her arm, and dismiss her.

Rumdoom points out that taking Ber out of the fight would not be enough to swing things for Risur numerically speaking.

Finally, Harkover requests that they admit another petitioner – Bishop Antonescu, Flint’s senior clergyman and Crisillyir’s de facto ambassador. Harkover did not think it meet to deny the bishop an audience, but waits on the king’s decision. Korrigan acquiesces and Antonescu enters awkwardly, having come to ask a favour so soon after his nation declared war. Antonescu explains that he has parleyed this meeting on behalf of one of his parishioners and asks for permission to admit them too. They guess at his identity and Uriel asks if the king would rather keep his distance and send an intermediary, but Korrigan demurs and admits him. As suspected, in walks Morgan Cippiano, head of the Family in Flint.

Cippiano greets the king as if they have never met. He says the first ships since the starfall have begun to reach Risur from Crisillyir, and they bring stories of madness in the land of his forefathers. It is said that the people have begun to put their gods on trial. Every trial ends with a verdict of guilty, and every sentence is death. Somehow this is not simply a show, but the gods themselves are present, and as each dies, so do many of his or her followers.

Then Morgan kneels with humility and removes his fishhook necklace. He has family who are dying in Crisillyir, he says, and he’s going to return to save them if he can. He has nothing to offer the king, but he also knows no one else who might be able to help as they can.

Sotto voce, Harkover Lee reminds King Baldrey that they’ll need the ritual of the Axis Seal, which as best they can determine is being kept in the Grand Librarium in Alais Primos. Perhaps they can kill two birds with one stone?

King Baldrey ponders aloud how the clergy can be mounting a military operation if their nation is in chaos. Cippiano does not know.

The king agrees to help, with the caveat that more urgent business in Ber must be dealt with first. (There is a long debate about this – the relative power and importance of Crisillyir balanced against their greater friendship with and affinity for Ber. In the end Korrigan decides to prioritise Glaucia’s request.) Cippiano begs that they hurry and withdraws.

Meanwhile, Around the World…

War! As news spreads of imminent invasions from the rest of the world, the people of Risur stand stalwart, and many are eager to volunteer for military service to defend their homeland. Fearful citizens are glad to have a concrete threat to prepare against, since so far there seems to be no solution to the strange dark skies.

What is It? Though the shipping lanes have been opened since Risur’s monarch defeated She Who Writhes, sailors have sighted strange new sea creatures, their skin slick and red as if with blood. Were these creatures always here and merely held at bay by the fey titan, or did they arrive after the stars fell from the skies? So far no one has reported any attacks by these bloody beasts.

Good. Clericists and adherents of the Old Faith are meeting in Dawn Square each day this month to debate the nature of goodness, and to discuss ways to increase overall prosperity in this dark time. Organizers have asked both Flint police and the Dockers Guild to volunteer watchmen with a mission to prevent hiveminds from forming. Local entrepreneur Morgan Cippiano lamented that there was so much will to effect change, but the dangers of hiveminds forces them to act slowly.

Four. Ambassadors from Ber, Crisillyir, Danor, and Drakr have all lodged formal declarations of war against Risur. However Methan du-Nadria, head of the Danoran consulate in Flint, states that the Danoran people are not committed to the invasion. Indeed, they feel a debt of obligation to the Risuri monarch and those allies who managed to slay a titanic hivemind that threatened their capital city of Cherage.

Absolutely Nothing. Asher Henton, Distinguished Professor of Otherworldly Physics at Kitham University in Shale has completed a detailed survey of the dark sky in search of new stars. What lies out there? “Absolutely nothing,” he says, aside from a handful of readily visible planets and the swirling vortex that has been dubbed The Gyre. And what is the Gyre? Henton refused to comment until he has a clearer understanding, though he ominously stated that it comes more into focus every day.

Session 207, Part Two

Personal Plotlines

The Coaltongue will arrive in Flint in just over a day. An extensive refit has been planned, but will only take 24 hours, with the help of Alden Wondermaker and Uru. To make the most of their time, Leon will teleport to the Ziggurat of Avilona, and use phantom steeds to travel to Seobriga (with Rumdoom tagging along, just in case). Once there he will return to Flint, pick up the others, and teleport back to Seobriga to meet with Glaucia. Meanwhile, the Coaltongue will set off for Ursalina, and they will join the vessel en route.

Gupta
– Has disappeared again. Does not attend briefing in Torfeld Palace.

Quratulain
– Keeps a low profile too, after the briefing, and experiences a very strange dream.

Korrigan
– At first, stays behind at Torfeld Palace making detailed plans for invasion, explaining to his generals the guerrilla tactics he wants them to use. There is some resistance, but in the end they accept the wisdom of this approach. Then travels to Flint, where public opinion in has moved in favour of Gale: rational debate winning out over emotional, knee-jerk reactions. Gale too has reassessed the prospect of Governorship, but only if compromises can be made. She won’t preside over a ‘filthy, burning slum’. Korrigan tells her that she should submit her ideas to the population, and allow them to decide. It is decided to make use of the new radio technology to allow campaign speeches to be broadcast, avoiding hiveminds. (Alden Wondermaker has also finished work on the development of anti-magic mines and is ordered to move on to battle armour.) More news from Cherage: Korrigan’s friend and contact Naz Duchamps has been freed from prison, and is actively opposing the Jierre dynasty and their support of the Ob.

Uru
– Returns to the toyshop of Tinker Jack and pursues his new ideas about the marriage of technology with nature, by drawing on his bond with the city. In doing so, he recalls the ground-breaking work of the urban dryad Jelia, and Tortho Chell – to create constructs (and machines) that were ‘grown’, not made. Uru suddenly realises now that this is how Conquo was constructed. Could this be the way forward? To grow, instead of forge, technology.

Uru spends the rest of his time assisting with the refit of the Coaltongue. Principally, fitting bomb-bay doors and hatches to the lower hull, removing the keel and internal workings, and making space for the Sunfish and dragon-fliers.

Leon
– Retires to the cave of the Thinker to meditate on what has happened recently, to clear his mind and think about Kasvarina and her death. He is warned of approaching danger by his spirit pseudodragon, Rahu Ketu and is able to teleport away. The assailants were swamp creatures – minions of his erstwhile patron Avagdu, a flabby, toad-like exarch of the Voice of Rot.

Just before he leaves, Leon is invited to (but cannot attend) the induction ceremony of Gupta into the Vekeshi Mystics.

Rumdoom
– Has a second, larger kraken tattooed on his back, to represent his victory over She Who Writhes. His advisors tell him about the Lost Riders: great warlords who disappeared into a storm, seeking a battle they never found. In life, they were said to have offered the souls of the defeated to their patron, known as Speaker of Snow, Heart of Black Ice, and the Warden of the Bleak Gate, who it is said had an eye torn out by an ancient hero.

Rumdoom makes a variety of extravagant demands of his followers, and they look embarrassed and shoe-gaze. (They look to their leader for the heroics, which is why they follow him, and not the other way around.)

He arranges a magical link to make it easier for Hildegaard to accompany him into combat as his shield maiden. (Previously, it was hard for her to keep up. Twinned bracers mean she will teleport to his side if he moves too far away.)

Contacts Vlendham Heid via sending. Heid responds, “En route to Bhad Ryzhavdut, feeling optimistic despite ill omens - did you see the five comets? Thank you again for the ‘good ending’ in Cherage!”Rumdoom goes to visit Khaled Valchek to ask him to consider running for Governor, only to find Valchek is already printing his campaign posters…

Then Rumdoom leaves with Leon.

Uriel
– Further conversations with Xambria, who he feels has been dealt a terrible hand, which goes some way to explain her actions on Mutravir: Having lost her body and been falsely tempted by Ashima-Shimtu; having lost first Malthusius, and then Conquo.Xambria says she regrets the way things happened, and hoped they would turn out differently, but understands that her complete betrayal cannot easily be forgiven by the others. She mentions how the very moment she chose sides, Nicodemus revealed himself to be ‘ruthless’ in his purge. But then she had chosen her side, and did her best to ensure that the Ob’s grand design worked.

Xambria offers her help dealing with the gidim. She has shared the mind of Sijhen and studied the records of the gith. Uriel offers her to enter gestalt with him once again, and even to bring along a weak duplicant for her to be ‘let out’ every once in a while. (He had some more generous plans, but Korrigan refused to allow them.)

Xambria says she can’t really live in those things, which brings her to her final request. In return for her help, she wants Uriel to allow Gupta ‘to do her mind-wipe thing’ and put Xambria out of her misery. (Later, when told about this request, Gupta refuses. Thought I was she who suggested this punishment originally, she has since decided it is to easy a way out for an unrepentant traitor.)

Session 208, Part One - Loose Ends in Flint

Leon and Rumdoom travelled by phantom steed to Seobriga, from the Ziggurat of Av. They arrived without incident on the outskirts of the city and without further ado, Leon teleported back to Flint, picked up the rest of the unit (along with Brakken) and returned to Seobriga. Meanwhile, the refit of the Coaltongue was completed, and the ship headed southwest, for Ursalina.

Aboard, in addition to Admiral Smith and his crew: Kieran Sentacore, the royal biographer; most of Rumdoom’s retinue (only Hildegaard and Thurgid had travelled with Leon); Ayesha and her children (but not Kai, who Korrigan preferred to keep with him at all times, where it was safer); and Amielle Latimer, who Korrigan had recruited to provide an additional layer of security (and to keep her occupied).

The Coaltongue was protected from scrying by the most powerful wards El Extrano could provide. He had come to visit Korrigan in his chambers (unbidden and unannounced) and put this suggestion to him. The only trouble was that even he would not be able to locate them, and so could not help out without being asked. Korrigan asked him what he could tell them about Ursalina. Disturbingly, the answer was “not much”. Communication was non-existent and teleportation was blocked. El Extrano was working on the latter issue. Korrigan asked if he had an agent in the city. The kobold said, “No. But you do.” It turned out that one ‘Agent Doran’ was known to be in the city when the Great Eclipse caused it to be cut off. Korrigan didn’t recognise the name, until El Extrano provided a list of some of his aliases: Saladoor Saan, Don Zaputo, and the Dread Pirate Roberta.

Other loose ends were tied up by the rest of the Unit. Uriel worked with Acting Chief Inspector Dima to put together a new RHC unit for Flint. Dima suggested recalling Carlao and Serena, his old comrades whom Korrigan had transferred after they sided with Saxby. They were both keen to return to their home city. Uriel checked with Korrigan who gave the go-ahead (assuming they were both screened for Ob affiliations). They would join Andrei von Recklinghausen. While at RHC HQ, Uriel encountered the lingering ghost of Doctor Wil Stanmore, late of Unit B, who had been murdered by Ludo Marcione when he refused to join the Obscurati, and was still sat behind his old desk. Neither he nor Uriel could account for the fact that he had lingered here, nor tell why he had not been drawn towards Cauldron Hill. Uriel asked if there was anything he could do to help, and Dr Stanmore said he’d like to ‘get out from behind this desk’, and so a new recruit was added to the roster. Finally, Uriel went to the lunatic asylum to see if anything could be done for Brajham.

Brajham had also been a member of unit B, but had lost his mind sometime after the death of his brother Theren, during the assault on Cauldron Hill, and had been swiftly side-lined by Marcione, instead of receiving the help he deserved. Now Brajham was confined behind fire retardant screens, as he blazed with permanent fire, which had immolated his hair and clothes. Though the sorcerer was hostile, Uriel simply became insubstantial, passed through the walls and laid his hands upon the tormented elf. When he was still, Uriel called for Korrigan, who braved the fires and healed him. When he awoke, Brajham was calm and rational, although slightly subdued, and the fires around him still burned. This permanent blaze notwithstanding, he would be interested in rejoining the unit, he said, particularly when he learned that Doctor Stanmore was still around.

Uru, meanwhile, divided his attention between the Coaltongue in its makeshift shipyard – the huge quarry where Alden Wondermaker lived with his wererat friends – and his newfound interest in blurring the lines between technology and nature. This involved Wondermaker too, for, as the Clockwork King, he had supplied the rudimentary programmes for the experiments of Tortho Chell and, as the sentient creation of Tinker Oddcog, he felt he straddled that dividing line himself. They worked on some simple creations and to their surprise and excitement, found they worked much better than they could have hoped. In a matter of a day or so they raised a clutch of tiny hermit-crab-like robots. How had this been achieved so easily, and yet never been done before? Clues to the answer lay in a breathless report on the over-abundance of food production which had come before the king only a few days earlier. Crop yields had doubled, not just in the weftlands, where the Father of Thunder had promised a bounty, but in the arbours, orchards, plantations and elsewhere. Uriel pondered both matters, recognised the connection, and realised that the cause was Mojang, the plane of Life: the weird purple plane that they had glimpsed all those years ago on Axis Island. Its trait? Artifice!

When Leon returned, the others were ready to go. Quratulain returned, and seemed the same as ever (although the keenest of eyes may have sensed something had changed). When they were on board the Coaltongue some time later, Kai slipped a paper ‘Quratulain mask’ under her door. He had drawn a smile on it.

Gupta, however was very different. She moved differently. While always focused and patient, she exhibited a different sort of focus, a different sort of patience. Previously, she may have considered an object for a while before reaching for it. Now, she began to reach for it at once, only slowly, so that the same amount of time would have elapsed. “It is nice to see you looking forward,” said Uriel (who sometimes wondered if his own down-to-earth attitude wasn’t designed to avoid doing the very same). Gupta had been wholeheartedly embraced by the Vekeshi Mystics, who revealed that they saw in her a great hope – as if she were their avatar in these end times. Gupta had been driven to them by the realisation that everything eladrin died. That the Great Malice wasn’t some historical event, to be avenged or mourned, but was continual and on-going. Both she and the Vekeshi saw the Obscurati as the real enemy – both the author of current woes in Elfaivar, and of the Great Malice. (And in Gupta’s case, responsible for the death of her whole family.) Gupta also had some hasty regret in that, had she not resurrected Helandra, the Jenny Greenteeth situation might have been avoided. (Oddly, that had been at the urging of Kasvarina. …) Now she felt the need to thwart Greenteeth’s machinations too.

Session 208, Part Two - Time for a Savage Beating

Glaucia stepped out of the shadows in the Palacio Justicia de los Huesos del Tirania Widoreva. She gnashed her canines and said, “To be brief: Here in Ber we thrash slavers, but most of the nation is blind to their new chains. I am not blind, and so enemies seek me. I made a blunder as I came to meet you. Some of them will be arriving soon.”

Almost immediately, the space filled up with dozens of mobile scrying sensors that resembled disembodied eyes (invisible to all but Leon and Glaucia, who was using truesight too). Two ominous, purple lights also appeared nearby. Brakken stepped up beside Glaucia and shielded her from detection with his mind. Glaucia held up a warding hand, and a broad shell of faintly visible energy appeared around all of them. “Cowards hide behind guns and bows,” she announced. “If you want to kill us, you’ll have to come closer.”

An overconfident ghost councillor floated casually into the courtroom. Korrigan knew him to be Shuman Larkins. “More tempting targets have presented themselves it seems. We mustn’t miss this opportunity to please Nicodemus! Hasten, my eclipse killers! To work!” Half a dozen silhouettes scuttled out of hiding, paired off against Gupta, Uriel and Leon, and vanished into their shadows – invisible when adjacent to a foe. It was hard to avoid their blades and their attacks were swingeing.

Two more fired crossbow bolts at Uru – the only unit member outside Glaucia’s ward (and no longer hidden thanks to Shuman Larkin’s magical eyes). He ducked and dodged adroitly and had Little Jack put up an opaque black shield, before scuttling over to Larkins to harass him.

Larkins waved a hand and summoned two more purple lights. The line between two of these nodes passed through Uru and Rumdoom, whose animal instincts to panic were aroused. Uru felt a frantic urge to run, following the path of this malevolent gauntlet, but he shrugged it off. Rumdoom was not so lucky, and began jogging along the lines, with his entourage in tow.

Uriel cast truesight and stepped away from his assailants, revealing them. Quratulain now had a fair number of targets and she shot at them all with her new lantern blaster. She chose the ‘frost’ setting, otherwise it may have been more efficacious, and fiddled with the dial to try again.

Larkins casually reached out and touched Uru’s shield, shattering it. “Our grand design has greatly increased the power of those bonded with Nicodemus,” he said, and thrust his palm out to touch Uru. He missed; Uru scuttled back, sensing the necrotic power the ghost wielded. Larkins scoffed and flew high into the air, but was still caught up when Uru summoned the Genius Loci of Seobriga: the spirits of the city were old friends, and tugged, pulled and tore at his foes.

Korrigan apologised to his friends, who would experience a slight disturbance: he stomped on the ground, knocking all of the eclipse killers away. Quratulain took the opportunity of their exposure, and opened fire with her blaster set to ‘force’. Several died.

Things got complicated: Uriel summoned the power of his incarnation, Cardinal Tadeas. Larkins summoned more nodes, and a horrid necrotic orb. Korrigan yelled an order, and everyone move away from it, sharpish. Leon began dispelling the nodes, as did Glaucia, causing Rumdoom to stop jogging and stand, confused. Larkins didn’t like that, so he glanced at Leon and put a shushing finger to his lips. Leon’s tongue began to rot in his head!

Then Quratulain fired again, and more eclipse killers fell. Freed up, Uriel strode towards Larkins, sacrificed a fraction of his lifeforce to empower his sunbeam spell, and obliterated Larkins with radiance. Before Larkins could dissolve and return to the ghost council, Uriel captured his spirit and forced him to remain. That would confuse Nicodemus!

How many times did you actually say that building's name?

Only once. One of my players is Spanish, so it's a bit embarrassing. He wasn't with the group when we ran adventure #6, so it wasn't a problem then! Out of interest, where did you get the translations for these place names, etc? He often looks nonplussed when I read them out. (Not that one, but Citado Cavallo, for example.)

Most of the time I'd come up with some name I wanted to translate, and then I'd use Google Translate, and then fiddle around with some letters so it wasn't explicitly Spanish or Portuguese or Catalan or Latin.

Oh good. I thought perhaps you or a friend of yours wasn't quite as good a Spanish speaker as you thought. Didn't quite know how to break it to you.
