[SBLOCK=OOC]Jarel-karn spend two healing surge and is full.[/SBLOCK]

"What the hell was that? I thought that bastard was a necromancer?" asks Jarel-karn as the octopus flee by the sewer.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Knowledge Arcana to learn something about that octopus: 1d20+10=18

Mal, have you ever seen the animation series named Reboot? That's look like the start of the final of season 3...[/SBLOCK]

[sblock=Jarel]
I knew it would feel manga-esque, with tentacles and all, but I have never seen reboot.

Arcana : It seems as if Jarec was never really human but rather some extra-planar creature who took his shape or perhaps slew him and inhabited his body. This creature definetely has affinity with necrotic energies but doesn't seem to be an undead. [/sblock]

Mesa shook out of his slight state of shock at Jarel's words. He walks through the water, stopping below the hole that... thing had ripped into the ceiling. Light filtered down, and dust motes drifted in and out of the light in an almost hypnotic pattern.

"Well, maybe it is. It's just not a human necromancer." He glanced briefly at Jarel and Andrec. "Whatever it is, it's... wrong. Things like that shouldn't exist."

There was more than that, but he couldn't put it into words. Mesa knew the natural world, the ebb and flow of the primal powers that controlled it, and the delicate balance that all life was based on. That thing felt like the antithesis of that world, that balance. It was a threat to the core of his being, and he longed to gut it with his claws and ensure it never threatened the primal powers.

He pulled himself away from the dancing motes and grinned coldly at the others. "I think a hunt is called for. Ye think we should meet up with the rest of our little group, then together we can destroy that abomination?"

[sblock=OOC]I'll burn one healing surge for now.

What time of day is it, do we know? I can't remember.

Nature roll 1d20+9=18. Has Mesa ever heard of anything like this in the world, or is his jumping to the opinion that something with more tentacles than eyes and trafficking in the undead is something unnatural justified? i know I won't know if it's true based on this roll, but I want to supplement my roleplaying with a bit of crunch.[/sblock]

"That was obviously not human. Iève never seen such. It is able to control some kind of necrotic energy for sure, and that's how Jarec was able to animate those zombies I think... well, it wasn't exactly Jarec, it was his body, but control by that octopus thing. Let's climb up and look how are the others. After that, we better hunt that thing before it find another host."

Montroya walks over to the hole, giving the others a hand in getting up. "Did you take care of the necromancer?" the deva says, unaware of what happened below. "I found this on the halfling." The deva holds out the note for the others.

Note:

Once the deed is done, I need you at the docks as backup for the locks. Meet Me at the cafe in front of the warehouse.

[sblock=ooc]I took quite a beating in that battle. Maybe next time I won't be so quick to take a hit. ;) I've got only 1 surge left. Hopefully I can take advantage of my long range, and stay clear of baddies. Just letting those know that need to in case something unexpected happens.[/sblock]

[sblock=Mesa Nature check]Not more to say. It isn't the appropriate skill. But you feel correct in stating that is not part of the natural order at least![/sblock]

[sblock=Montroya]Your PC hasn't seen the Monster yet but you are the only one with a relevant skill and sooner or later you will take a gander so here goes :

Religion (1d20+11=28)

DC 20 This is an Usurper. These creatures of the Shadowfell are also mentioned in the index of the Light Forsaken Codex. You do remember that, incredibly enough, these were supposedly once human even though they can no longer exist for prolonged periods in the material plane in their natural form . This one is fairly small and probably very young. You remember enough to know that rebuke undead won't work because these are not technically undead.

DC 25 You have gleaned some more stories and know that these creatures serve a fallen master (The Usurper) whose full name is lost and that their goal is to bring him back.

[sblock]VirtualMat is back.

I made a ridiculously simple map and will see if the site holds. If it does, I will eventually revert to an old trick; use professional maps lifted from the net or scanned from dragon. I am just a little leery; last time I used a huge, uber cool 4 floor map for a big fight on VB, the site crashed for weeks and killed the game...

Anyway, the red squares are abandoned carts. The black squares are fancy columns for the hospital.

I did use appropriate token for my monsters this time, though.

All the monsters are cornering people trapped, petrified or wounded inside the carts. It seems a fair bet that the two underlings you see where recently turned from a civilians.

If you want me to upload more fitting tokens for your PC, send me an image you like.

Zombies and Crooks on Virtual Battlemat

Soon, the clamor outside the safety of the hospital is too much to bear and the heroes step outside. The pandomonium requires a string stomach to bear; there are torn bodies strewn accross the place. In the middle of abandoned cart, the tentacled horror is trying to access to a screaming woman hidden below a cart that has been turned outside down. He looks like an octopus trying to suck food out of an oyster.

More worrisome is the presence of the men whose features have been twisted, like their face was made of dark clay. Yet the clothes leave littel doubts that these were recently law abiding citizens of Daunton. Apparently, the monster doesn't devour or slaughter everyone... These foul creation of his are attempring to round up more victims for their master.

[sblock=Advice]While resting after this fight will give precious time to Rinch, there is no helping it. Give it everything you got, blow all dailies and AP, this is a VERY tough fight.[/sblock]

[sblock=Initiative]No surprise round, but since you come out to challenge the beast, you all get to act. Basically, assume you have all beaten the initiative of the monsters[/sblock]

Matlal : 31/31 [8] AP

I took the liberty of spending some HS for Matlal and Mesa because it was a nio brainer. I didn't do it for Andrec. His situation is a bit trickier because he has only 3 HS left and would need 2 to get back to full health, so... What's your call Tom?

[sblock=ooc]I say we should try to take down the reaper on the right first. There's more carts around there, and big ol' squidface won't be able to maneuver quite as easily. Since this is supposed to be difficult, might as well use every advantage that we can get.[/sblock]

Matlal had missed the original appearance of the tentacled monster while finishing the fight above the sewers, but simply witnessing the hole it burst through the ground was enough to make his approach outside unusually cautious for a barbarian. If the damage it left behind was frightening, there weren't many words to describe the monster itself. "Dissa revoltin' developement, fo'sho'. Matlal seen plenty a' undead, but 'e ain't neva seen not'ing like dat."

Matlal crouched down, figuring that they had precious little time to plan their course of action. He quickly surveyed the situation, taking note of the two risen slaves of the monster. "I t'ink we cut off da lil' guys firs', ja? Unless he starts makin' mo' of dem. Den we got a problem an' shoul' prolly try to kill big-squiddy 'ere. 'Opefully dem carts come to our advantage, since missa ugly is too big to move proper. Soun' good? Ja."

And with this cursory examination of strategy, Matlal characteristically goes flying down the field of combat like a bat out of hell, although he at least takes the consideration to flank around to the far side of the square. He charges one of the reapers but finds the clay-like creations surprisingly durable. "&$*#."

[sblock=Tor XP]
Mal said:
Time XP : Tor's PC has been involved from July 11th to August 24th : 44 day.

1000 XP / 365 * 44 = 121 XP.

Monster XP

9 minion zombie * 31 = 279
9 Zombie * 125 = 1125
1 Grave hound = 150
1 Jarec = 150
8 thugs = 200
1 Halfling thief = 125
Spider Zombie = 150

279 + 1125 + 150 + 150 +200 + 125 + 150 = 2179

2179 / 6 = 363 XP

Total :

121 + 363 = 484 XP

For Judge approval

Treasure : due to the nature of the adventure, to be officialized at the end of the adventure, but it will be worth 48% of what you are supposed to get in one level.

Usually we don't give XP to characters while they are being NPCd. But I'm not particularly interested in going back and figuring out when Tor stopped being played by his player and started being NPCd, so whatever you think is best, is fine with me.

Likewise, I wouldn't exercise too many brain cells trying to arrange any treasure to give to him unless his player comes back by the time the adventure ends.

[sblock=Religion roll for Reapers]I assume the last roll was only for the squid thing? If so here is a religion roll for the reavers. I just need to know if they are vulnurable to radiant/undead or not. rel on reap (1d20+11=22) [/sblock]

Montroya emerges from the hospital, horrified at the destruction before him. Seeking to identify the foes and their weaknesses, the deva looks into their eyes. Satisfied, Montroya moves in front of one of the hospital pillars. Raising his staff, lightning forks from the implement to strike at the reaver and the ursurper. Both creatures dodge the bolts rather easily.

[sblock=Montroya]Reapers are not undead either. No one resists radiant nor is vulnerable.

Only relevant resistance is necrotic (Usurper has resist 15, somehow it got dropped out of his block)

PS : What's up with your defenses? I think you inceased them by 2 after your last second wind but never dropped them back to normal.
