30 Ches 1500 DR
A warning has been issued by the Council of Mages, in
Suzail, to all registered spellcasters living in
Cormyr.
The rash of
spellbook thefts in Cormyr is widely known. Lesser known is the fact of the recovery by adventurers of two stolen spellbooks that had been turned into mindtraps.
Upon closer examination, after the spellbooks were returned to their owners, each recovered spellbook proved to be enchanted in such a way that, should a wizard attempt to memorize a spell from their spellbook, they would open their mind to whomever, or whatever, imposed this new enchantment on their property, allowing that unknown spellcaster to read the wizard’s mind at will—and perhaps to control it.
Just who is trying to peer into the minds of
Cormyr’s resident mages and take control of them is anyone’s guess. Among the more popular stories are that one or more Baneliches have taken an interest in
Cormyr. The names of two supposed Baneliches, Clarth Hornhaeld and Laumbur Yuthlekh, have been quietly whispered.
Others say this is the latest attempt of the Shadovar to take control of Cormyr from within. Learned folk are aware that the Shadovar’s home, Thultanthar, was destroyed in battle with the elves of Myth Drannor, but there is wide disagreement about whether the Shadovar themselves have been eradicated once and for all.
Still others claim less well known, but equally sinister forces are at work in Cormyr, such as the Twisted Rune. Certain Harpers operating in Cormyr are quietly reminding folk they befriend that claims of the Twisted Rune’s demise are unfounded, even dangerous.
As one Harper put it, “Beware. The Rune carries on. Their grip on Calimshan is firm. They will grasp for more in time.”
