SolSpace is a campaign setting for the
What's OLD is NEW roleplaying game. It covers a region of space some 500 parsecs across, centered on our own system, Sol, and based on real astronomical maps.
SolSpace is set in an age of galactic exploration as the Allied Union of Worlds uncovers new worlds and new alien cultures.
Explored Space
In the late 23rd Century, only about 1/60th of the Milky Way Galaxy has been explored. The Union has charted up as far as the Great Rift, which obscured much of what lies beyond it, and out towards the Helix Nebula in the Trailing areas; the famed
USF Endeavour went missing beyond the Helix Nebula, an event which remains a mystery to this day. While no other vast star empires have yet been encountered, there are worlds and regions hostile to the Union, most notable Sparta. It is the mission of the Union Frontier Operations division to explore and expand this region.
Allied Union of Worlds
Formed in 2245, the Allied Union of Worlds is a body akin to the United Nations. It is not a governing body or a federation, and members of the Union maintain their own sovereignty. The Union has no jurisdiction over individual worlds, except where they conflict with interstellar law. All members of the Union agree via treaty to the provisions of interstellar law.
The Union is funded by its constituent members, and maintains its own navy, The Union Space Force. The USF provides protection to Union members, maintains the freedom of interstellar space, enforces interstellar law, and explores and colonizes the frontiers of known space. It is a far more effective force than any single world could create.
The USF is divided into the Union Space Force Academy (USFA), Colonial Operations (USFCO), Naval Operations (USFN), Marine Corps (USFMC), Frontier Operations (UFO), Intelligence Operations (USFIO), and the Psi-Corps.

Star Systems
SolSpace Map |
 |
Most star systems are based on real astronomical data. These are just some of the many alien civilizations within the
SolSpace setting. The
Galactic Sentience Catalog contains details of many more alien species. Sectors form an irregular patchwork of regions.
SolSpace is the core sector, and includes the region which was referred to as the Outer Rim in the 22nd Century. Other sectors include the Nereid Sector, and the Galileo Sector, comprising currently unaligned and mainly corporate owned worlds.
Note that the larger scale (10 parsecs per hex) maps show only selected star systems. Each hex actually contains multiple systems.
SolSpace Sector
The SolSpace Sector is the location of Sol (Earth's star). It is about 20 parsecs across, and borders Sparta.
Felax
The Felan homeworld is in the Fomalhaut system about 8 parsecs from Sol. The system is notable for the gas giant Dagon, the first extrasolar planet ever discovered by Human telescopes, way back in 2008.

Other Systems
These systems are in the area charted by the Union.
Gacrux
Gacrux is the location of the Ogron Twins. The Ogron Twins, the two homeworlds of the Ogron race, are a permanent thorn in the side of the Union Worlds. Ogrons ignore the Union, doing exactly as they wish—plundering, slaving, and worse.

Galileo Sector
Galileo Sector |
 |
The Galileo Sector is dominated by independent worlds and organized crime. After years of independence, some of the planets in the Galileo Sector are considering Union membership. One such planet is Palermo, the home base of the Capitolia Business. It is described in more detail in the
Code of Honor trilogy of adventures.

Praesepe Sector
The Praesepe Sector (in which the Beehive Cluster can be found) is the home of Vendalyr, the Venetian homeworld. At nearly 200 parsecs distant, Venetian involvement in Union affairs is not common, although they are an associate member. The Venetians have colonized multiple star systems in the Beehive Cluster.

Sparta
Sparta Sector |
 |
Humans call the inhabitants of the Ankaa system Spartans because of their warrior culture. This, of course, is not their real name, and the Spartans call their homeworld Azatbar. Sparta covers the systems Ankaa, Hamal, and Alpheratz. The Spartans guard this territory jealously.
At only about 30 parsecs from Sol, this causes frequent tensions and a 'cold war' state. Sparta is only about 15 parsecs from the SolSpace sector, and well within the Union's sphere of influence.

Nereid Sector
Nereid Sector |
 |
The Nereid Sector is at the edge of explored space, part of the Union's vast frontier. It contains around 20 star systems, detailed fully in
The Nereid Trilogy. The Union has outposts there, and there are Union, Venetian, Spartan, and Ogron colonies there.

The Great Rift
The Great Rift is a massive band of dark dust clouds some 40 parsecs deep which obscure the Galactic North. The Union does not know what lies beyond the Great Rift.
