Leif's All-Eladrin DweomerFall Saga [4E, IC01]

Quarion was never a great student of math, but he is a keen observer and he takes up paper and and pen and quickly sketches out what he remembers of the lake's size and shape as well as a best guess at depth based on the height of the levee. He then presents it to the others for their opinion and calculations. "This should give you something to start from. Does this agree with your recollections dear brothers and sisters?"

"I see, about 250-300 acres in area, with a depth of probably 160-200 feet, as a fairly liberal estimate, because in a case like this you want to err on the liberal side, rather than leaving water behind...so what you're speaking of, then will take about a fourteenth level ritual. Or could you stand to leave some water behind? You might be able to get by with a twelfth level ritual. If you go much lower than that, you'll still be talking about a pretty extensive underwater operation. In fact, that would be a much easier way to approach the problem -- water breathing items are a dime a dozen by comparison to the kind of intensive ritual you'll need to drain the lake. Of couse, if you have plenty of gold to burn, uh, melt, then we can certainly talk price."

"Water breathing alone may not be enough," Sulannus says. "We seek to brace a fearsome creature in its den...and in this case the den is at the bottom of a lake. We'll need to be able to use our weapons and magic freely, or else we'll be marching to our deaths."

She managed to conceal her expression, somewhat, on hearing the power of the magic involved and adding up the cost of such a thing in her head. Clearly a middle road was needed.

"You're not talking about Archangault the Elusive, are you? Because I can save you very much time and trouble -- I'll just sell you each a large draught of poison. You can drink and die in peace here with much less pain and hassle."

"I think it's safe to say that it'd take more poison than you can find on any three planes of your choice, except for that Venom Plane, but no one's ever found that one."

"Or if they did they weren't able to return." Quarion smiles at his own wit. "Ok, we have a nice levee on this lake so if we can't drain it directly, how much of a ritual would it take to knock a great big hole in it? Unless you'd be willing to give us credit against the dragon's hoard? We would be willing to cut you in for say 5% if you drain the lake with an expensive ritual."

Gleithendale the Resonant nods briefly and smiles in recognition of Quarion's witicism, and says, "Five percent? I'd hardly bother to wipe my wrinkled old arse for you for five percent! I wouldn't, of course, ask for a full share, since you lot will be doing a significant amount of the heavy lifting, but i judge that you need my magic to get where you intend to go, or else you wouldn't be here now. Granted, you don't exactly have your hats in your hands, but that might be a better approach to take next time you go begging for spell-work. Anyway, tell you what, since I like you so much, and since: A) I never know when I might need a favor from House Phaedran, and B) You'll be doing all of the actual 'slaying' once I make it possible for you to do so, I'd be willing to do the casting for, say, eight-and-a-half percent. Oh, and don't think that you're the only ones at risk here -- Archangault the Elusive is no fool and he knows that there are only a handful of folk able to do such a feat and he, um, shall we say, knows where I live. Therefore, if you are less than entirely successful, I can expect to have to do quite a good bit of cleaning up behind you in order to be able to rest as easy at night as I have become so accustomed."

"Sounds like a reasonable price. But we choose your 8 1/2 %. You may not choose specific items from the hoard. Deal?"

Galin asks, cautious what the mage might want in return.
