Respen Replies And Vale Consents To Gus Going w/ Vega
RESPEN: : "Patience, my friend. We can be ready to leave by mid-afternoon, if not sooner. My horse is boarded and fed. My equipment appears to be ready. I shall leave now, escort Vega (and Gus, presumably) into Margull's tower, and will meet the rest of you southwest of the city at the fork of Lighthouse Street and the Gnarley Road between lunch and afternoon tea."
VALE: : ~ Gus will remain safe. That is splendid! ~
Vale recalls in a moment when he first encountered Gus. He was one of a number of specially bred Dire St. Cuthbert puppies belonging to a gnome-sometimes-adventurer-sometimes-animal trainer named Pobin Wreros from the Kron Hills. The only difference between average puppies and dire St. Cuthberts was size, and that was oh-so-enough of a difference. Gus was the most adventurous and least lumbering of the lot, easily the smartest, and nearly intelligent enough to equal or best any trained animal. He might even work completely independently, were it not for his hobbit-like attention span. He had an amazing nose, but often not much of a sense of direction, finding himself in sometimes troubling and other times funny (and sometimes both at the same time) situations. Gus had found his way into the armory and was sniffing around a suit of dwarven plate armor, held in place on a suit rack awaiting the masterwork bluing. Gus had knocked it over and found himself with the chest piece wedged on to his head like a helmet. He had panicked in the moment and run headfirst into Vale, who helped him remove the chest piece and was promptly licked and tackled by the grateful Gus. It was love at first sight. Gus was more than simply a pet to Vale, and Vale had been uncomfortable both leaving him in Dyvers or taking him to Skorane. Protecting Vega accommodated both. Gus had a job, a job he would do dutifully and fiercely, and he would understand that. And he would not become fodder among the filth they were to encounter in Skorane.
He called to Gus to come to him, "Augustus! Come!" A brief pause. "AUG-US-TUS! COME!" Another brief pause. He caught the sideways glances of the others as they waited in awkward pause to hear Gus bark or otherwise approaching. Then, nearly silently, Gus appeared among them. He was not there one minute, and then there the next. Drooling and happy...
Gus let out a muffled "RUFF."
Vale, to Gus: "Playing?"
"Ruff."
Vale, looked eye to eye with Gus. "Mission."
Gus became excited, and he turned a circle in front of Vale and other party members.
Vale, taking Vega's hand gently, and placing it in front of Gus' nose, and then on his head, and shoulder, and hindquarters.
"Gus, Mission!"
"Ruff".
"Protect. Serve. Guard. Obey. Vega."
To Vega: "He's in your charge. He will do as you wish, protect you, comfort you, and lead you into mischief but out of trouble. One warning to you. He is trained enough to obey any number of a dozen and a half commands. And he is brilliant enough to work independently. However, if he encounters something new, he is going to look to you for guidance in how to respond. He does not naturally perceive threats unless it's patently obvious and you are attacked. So if you want him to prevent an attack, you need to tell him that's what is happening. Tell him to defend you. (at this, Gus' ears perk up to the use of the word). "
To Respen & the party: "It's better if he goes on his mission with you or someone else escorting Vega. He will become frustrated if he sees me leave at the same time. No need for that. "
Vale spends a few minutes explaining Gus' commands and some of his personality. He doesn't give all of it away, and saves some of his funnier behaviors for Vega to experience on her own.
To the Party: " I will hold my curiosity for Margull's 'inner sanctum' for the future. I am ready within the hour. I will attend to my horse, equipment, and belongings. "

"I have been in a city far longer than I care to be. I have a need to move on. It might as well be toward a purpose like cleansing Skorane. I am ready to leave, at this moment. I need nothing further, here."
