    Encounters for larger parties

My group and I are finally converting to 4E. I'm the DM for a group of six players (fighter, paladin, rogue, ranger, wizard). I plan to stick mostly to published adventures until we're all comfortable with the ruleset. My issue is that the published stuff all seems balanced for a party of four...

Why I dislike Sigil and the Lady of Pain

I use Sigil but not the Lady of Pain. I don't see the logic behind having a literally unbeatable uberdeity just for one city and travel hub. Some individual campaign settings already have mind-crogglingly powerful uberdeities of their own. The most well known is Ao of the Forgotten Realms, who...

Speed 0, Fly Speed x, Prone, and Crawling

If it is knocked prone while flying, it falls. If it has a move action left, or if it hasn't yet hit the ground by its next turn, it can take the "Stand Up" action to right itself. If it's prone on the ground, and for any reason can't take off again, speed 0 means it can't move anywhere. It...

    Minor Action (save ends)?

It doesn't seem confusing to me. If the caster chooses not to sustain it, then the power ends (and no save is necessary). If the target saves, the power is ended (and cannot be further sustained). Is there a detail I'm missing?

    Trolls, trolls and more trolls

Hey, I never noticed that before! That's the first surprise I've had from 3.5 in a long time. The SRD has them listed as aquatic, but not amphibious, which by RAW means they can breathe only in water. I'm guessing that is an oversight; they have a listed land speed, which would be silly if they...

    Trolls, trolls and more trolls

But scrags only regenerate when completely immersed in water. While out on land raids they are not nearly as threatening, and can be killed with normal weapons.

    Trolls, trolls and more trolls

It takes the same amount of time. Regeneration has two effects. It causes most damage to convert to nonlethal damage, and it heals nonlethal damage at an accelerated rate. Fire and acid do not get converted, and stay normal damage, which means those hit points have to be recovered via natural...

    Massive Damage Alternate Ruling

But if you're low enough level that 1 hp/rd is any kind of serious concern, you're probably low enough level that the 50 hp attack was fatal anyway. The massive damage rule was invented to inject some minimal amount of realism into high level play. It's what prevents a high level fighter from...

    Massive Damage Alternate Ruling

So if I have 100 hit points, and get hit for 50, I can still act normally but will lose 1 hit point per round? That seems negligible to me. If I'm fighting a monster that dishes out 50 points in a shot, a few rounds of 1-point losses are the least of my concerns. I have plenty of time to find...

    Base Class i'm building

I think that's part of the problem. You're giving abilities as if this guy had levels in three different prestige classes at the same time, plus letting him still have the base class abilities as well. A balanced character gets only one prestige class at a time. And those classes have prereqs...

    Base Class i'm building

Okay, let's compare to the rogue. You took away one skill point per level, but then you gave this guy a skill bonus, of effectively +1 point per level to six skills. It works out to this guy having 5 more skill points than the rogue. You took away the rogue's four special abilities/bonus...

    Base Class i'm building

It looks to me like this new class has the same abilities as the rogue, plus most of the ones of a monk, with a bunch of other ones added in. If this class is available, is there any reason for someone to still play a rogue or monk?

What Do You Do With A Problem Item?

I remove the item, with as plausible an in-game reason as possible. One time when it was a magic sword, they encountered an ogre fighter with Improved Sunder and a shatterspike. Another time they got a surprise meeting with a mid-level villain, who offered to betray his boss and give them a...

Castles are worthless against armies with mages?

Do you have any interesting tactics that do not involve shrink item? Because it still sounds to me like your problem is with that spell and not with castles.

Castles are worthless against armies with mages?

I'm fascinated by how many exploits are made possible by shrink item. IMC, I have house ruled it so that shrunk items retain 10% of their normal weight. It's still really useful for hauling treasure, but it stops armies from airdropping mountains or carrying infinite supplies. That aside, what...
