    No Prestige Classes

I very much agree with this (especially the parts I bolded). But I also agree with those advising against going back to AD&D's multi and dualclass rules. One reason is that I don't believe there needs to be different rules for humans and demihumans. Another reason is that I find 3e's...

The Assassin, Redux (Grayhawk please come!)

Shame about the lost posts... and I was wondering why some of my older bookmarked threads was still available. You're very welcome :) A little note on the skills: As you can see I'm using a house ruled skill list, with many condensed skills (like Hide + Move Silently = Sneak). If you're...

The Assassin, Redux (Grayhawk please come!)

Wha?!? I've been gone for a little while and now I see that alot of stuff is missing. What happened? Nyaricus, unfortunately I don't have the original write-up from that post (where I explained my reasoning for the design decisions) - I was counting on ENworld to store it for me :( But I can...

Need help picking a great fantasy novel

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations! Earlier today (before going to see 'Alexander' which premiered in Denmark today) I went to a couple of bookstores. I'm quite surprised at how difficult it is to get books by Leiber, Moorcock, Howard and Vance considering their reputation of being...

Need help picking a great fantasy novel

In a couple of days I'm going on a 2 week vacation and I want to bring a couple of good books. My first thought was to get something by Jack Vance (who I asked about in this thread), but none of the bookshops I checked here in Copenhagen had any of the ones I wanted (either the Lyonesse series...

What Jack Vance book should I get?

In researching Jack Vance, his body of work seems quite large. Is The Dying Earth series the one to read? As I understand it, it mixes Sci-Fi and fantasy. How much Sci-Fi? Are any of his series/novels pure Fantasy? (I found a list of some of his series here. Also, AFAIK the D&D magic system...

What Jack Vance book should I get?

In a week I'm off to Thailand for 14 days and I want to bring a couple of good books. I've encountered the name of Jack Vance a lot on these boards but have yet to read anything by him. What would be your recommendations? (1 or 2 books, maybe the start of a series. Preferably fantasy.) Are any...

What do your Orcs look like?

I like the orcs by Claudio Pozas, like this one. In my campaign, the orc race was created from humans, corrupted by Orcus.

    Critique my reworked core races

Thanks for your input so far! I agree that +2/-2 may be better balanced in the way that it assures 1 less ability mod on your penalty stat and a plus 1 ability mod on your bonus stat. I disagree that changing this to +1/-1 is 'weakening all of the demihuman races'. If it's possible to place...

    Critique my reworked core races

For my ongoing project of simplifying/reworking 3e, I've made some changes to the core races. Some of these are necessitated by other changes, notably to the skill system. As such, you may see a bonus to Alertness (equal to Listen, Search & Spot) or to Sneak (equal to Hide & Move Silently)...

    Multiple Potion Drinking

I really don't see why they would have to. The rules state that drinking a potion is a standard action, even if they don't bother to explain why it's a standard action. And if your players aren't satisfied with a 'them's the rulez' reply, I offered a possible explanation in my post above :)

    Why do elves trance?

Remathilis, I hope you didn't have to type all that up just now! (But if you did, thanks a lot.) So, the elven trance is presumably based on a flavor text from a 2e book of elves? Are there any other litterary examples? How do you all feel about the trance? Does it match your view of elves...

    Multiple Potion Drinking

To avoid this kind of situation in the future, I'd spell out that you can only drink 1 potion per round. If someone asks for a reasoning, it's because it's magic. That's how potions work. If you mix several of 'em up in a cup, to be able to drink more than one simultaneously, the potions negate...

    Why do elves trance?

Why is it, that 3e elves don't have to sleep? I quickly checked my 1e and 2e PHB, and I saw no mention of elves even being light sleepers. Is it to explain their immunity to Sleep magic? (Which doesn't explain why 3e halfelves share that immunity.) Did Tolkien mention something to this...

Adding Defense Bonus Without Increasing Combat Length

Personally, I don't like the defense bonus systems that doesn't stack with armor (like the one in UA). I also don't like defense bonus systems that max out at a whopping +12 to AC, as I feel that's just too high. Of course, according to UA, that variant is for campaigns where armor isn't as...

No ASF if proficient in armor or a 'spells in armor' skill?

That was exactly what I suggested in the thread that inspired this one :) In retrospect, I'd propably grant the benefit at the cost of a single feat instead: 'Armored Arcana. Prereq: Any armor proficiency. You may ignore ASF from any armor type you're proficient in.' Thus, a Fighter/Wizard...

    Turning Undead variant

The undead don't have a 'roll', they have a set DC set by the formula mentioned above. It hasn't been playtested, but let me run some examples and please tell me what you think: These assume a cleric with a cha of 14. I'll list the level required for the cleric to be able to turn the undead, as...

    all-published module campaign

Thanks for the kind words :) No, unfortunately I don't. I drew it by hand (on a brown-faded piece of paper - making it look like an old map), and I don't have access to a scanner. True, which is why I don't bother to calculate xp. I merely give them what seems right, taking into acount how...

    all-published module campaign

*Warning: This post includes minor spoilers from the adventure path modules* Here's what I did for my campaign: I wanted to use the Adventure Path modules, but as I both dislike high level play and the fast leveling of 3e, I just got the first 4 modules and intersected them with freebies from...

Third Edition Culture- Is is sustainable?

Since I'm in the process of simplifying/reworking 3.x to make it suit my tastes, I've also tried to address what you describe above. For those interested, you can find the thread here. If you just want to see the latest incarnation of the mechanic, go to post #25 on page 2. While you're at it...
