D&D 5E How it plays vs How it feels and looks

In response to an earlier post about weapons. I'm in the process of making my own version of D&D Next for my own table, and one of the things I'm working on is having a lot of differentiation in weapons. You're right: there are only a few properties that you can manipulate with attack bonus...

    Ask Monte Cook!

Monte, What are you feelings on d20 as a system? My group of gamers has tried a variety of systems, d10 white wolf, d6 shadowrun, along with other games like TROS, burning wheel, and Warhammer Fantasy (3rd ed). My feelings are that the linearity of d20 works well with heroic adventure, but is...

Fixing Grab, Bull Rush, and Endurance

I understand the desire to make Grab and Bull-Rush more open to everyone, but I think that there are already enough powers that that force or restrict movement that it's a non-issue. For me, Grab and Bull-Rush are there for when I'm desperate or the opportunity is too good to pass up, and my...

    Essential Essentials

I'm not sure a discussion of what rates Essentials vs. Non-Essentials products is what the OP is looking for. barabelsftw, If you go to the WOTC's character optimization forum, you can get a good look at all the classes and how they interact with the most up to date feats. The D&DI...

    D&D 4E Tips for a new 4E DM

I've been writing up a guide for my little brother who's a new DM and starting with 4th ed; it's a work in progress, but if you want it PM me and I'll send it to you the file. I've been playing since 2nd ed AD&D, and like 4th edition a lot. That being said as others have pointed out there is...

    Theme/background

I just finished listening to the PA Dark Sun podcast (which was hilarious and inspiring) but I was curious about the Theme/background that was mentioned. Tycho says they're something like a paragon path you take at character creation, and I wonder is this something that was introduced in PHB3...

    Warforged in Forgotten Realms?

Hi! I just bought the FR player's guide, and after skimming through it I found no mention of Warforged anywhere in there. I know that they weren't part of FR in 3.5...but with the rules update and spell plague...I was wondering if they've been mentioned anywhere. ...because I've got this...

NC - Goldsboro DM/player looking for 4th ed group

I just moved to the Goldsboro area, and I've been having some trouble finding a group to game with. I've got experience gaming in 4th ed, and a lot of DM experience from 3.0 and onward. Please contact me by email: austin.coccia(at)gmail.com

    How do you search?

I noticed that there's a 'most searched tabs' container on the left of my screen, but I can't figure out how I can create a search on these forums. Specifically I'm looking through the gamers seeking gamers forum, and it would be very helpful if I could just search for my state for instance.

    Raleigh NC (Apex) - 4E D&D - Seeking Player(s)

Are you still looking for another player? I live in Goldsboro, and I'm an experianced player. As far as class goes, I'm very flexable. Please email me back at austin.coccia(at)gmail.com. I tried to email you but the email was rejected.

    shuriken a superior weapon?

I don't understand what mechanically is superior about the shuriken. The dagger gives you almost the same capabilities, except the shuriken has 1 square longer range. Far throw (as a feat) gives you +2 squares range, although it requires Str 13 and I understand that for a light thrown weapon...

    Transporting gaming aids

Based on the advice from a previous thread, I bought some minis (both D&D and pewter Ral Partha), dungeon tiles, a timer, misc tokens, and of course dice. Next is what's used to transport all this stuff to and from all the different tables I visit. I've got some foam mini transporters that...

    Miniatures, and other tableside accessories

Thanks for all the help so far. I went to my FLGS, they had a bin full of ral partha/reaper minis that they were selling for $2 a pack, which was awesome. I'm going to buy that 4.0 mini starter set, and see how I like them, and I also bought the dungeon tiles by WOTC. Jeff - where is it that...

    Miniatures, and other tableside accessories

I once had a decent collection of Reaper and Chainmail miniatures that I used with my local group in college. When I left to join the military, I left all that paraphernalia with them. Now I plan on starting up a new group and was thinking about getting new miniatures and other accessories...

A dragon can outwit a party of adventurers. Can you?

Oh, I forgot one last bit of advice: I often found myself rushing my monsters' actions/turns to speed combat along, while my players had a pow-wow for each one of their turns. The fact is that they've got one character to worry about, and you've got one monster for each of them in a normal...

A dragon can outwit a party of adventurers. Can you?

I'm sorry if somebody mentioned this already. You've been giving some pretty sound advice on how to make the encounters more challenging, but you're forgetting one important thing: cheating. As the DM feel free to cheat. I do all the time, and the players like it that way. Now a very...

D&D 4E Death and Dying in 4E: Propose Your Own Homebrewed Rule!

My problem with HP is that as a DM when I take a character down, I want them to stay down until the end of the battle. Having even a single point of healing bring a character back from unconsciousness seems like a bad idea. My house rule is that once a character goes down, he's out for the...

The Devil's in the Details: Slavicsek reveals the Pit Fiend in all its glory

Can't say to much about the other points, but as far as no ranged attack goes he does fly and teleport, so I don't think he's necessarily helpless in that region. As far as no non-combat mechanics, I too wondered why exactly Pit-fiends do what they do. Their power should be reflected somewhere...
