    Academy Award Nominations

Back when I worked in video stores I could keep up with the Oscars. These days, sadly, I am so far out of the loop that seeing the results after the fact impacts me as much as watching the pomp and self-adoration of the ceremony. There are several films I will take the time to watch, on video...

    Books on "tape"

Collapse was educational, yet the audio would drag in parts. With non-fiction it is hard to blame the voice actor, however a good actor can help. Freakonomics was quite interesting, as was Devil in the White City in parts.

    The return of Valiant Comics!?

This is good news. They had a good run with some great characters and concepts. Betweeen Image and Valiant, I thought Valiant's line was much more compelling and smart. Image was the fanboy flavor at that time, though, and then the legal battles started for Valiant. Whatever they come out...

    Books on "tape"

Some libraries subscribe to services to supplement their audio departments. Check with your local library's on-line services to see if they have anything like this. Unfortunately some of the better audios are tough to find, and Inter Library Loans do not extend to audio/visual materials. :(

    Top 25 Sci-Fi movies/tv (1982-present)

If we take the list apart we might see why each was chosen. Trying to fit other show/movies into the list is all personal opinion, as is the list of course, but... -------------------------------- 25. V: the Miniseries (1984) - Amid a sea of comedies, dramas, and Magnum, this show made the...

Did you watch the Superbowl or play D&D?

Normally I watch the Super Bowl while keeping occupied with something else. I watched it this year to see my Bears get destroyed. Truthfully, the game was the usual dud because of the endless commercial breaks, and the longer halftime show. The rain didn't help either since it seemed like two...

    Lost Room

Did Joe really kill the occupant? We never really find out. He resets with the room, and so will the key. There has to be more than one way into the room, right? After all, somehow objects made their way out of the room in the first place, including the key.

Malazan series by Steve Erikson... anyone read it?

I trodded through the first half of Gardens. I am not one to put a book down in the middle, but I will stop a series in the middle, and I'm glad that I didn't stop. The second half of Gardens finally gets to where it intends, and has fun doing it. Still, I'm not on the second book after a...

    Quintessential but obscure 80s movies...?

Any of the classic Corey flicks. Haim and Feldman, at it again! ;)

    The Superman Returns spoiler thread.

I got chills (good ones) after the plane sequence. That was a Superman action sequence. Singer may have gone a different route, but in tying the movie to the first two, he may have limited his options. He uses many concepts and ideas from the first two, and usually to great effect. The "son...

Starting point for Dirk Pitt novels

Sahara was the first Dirk Pitt novel I read, and it was a good starting point. There are probably other novels with more on the character, but I got a good bit of information from it.

Starwars Kid makes appearance on American Dad

I only caught the end of this episode, but this was definately a keeper.

    General "Lost" thoughts

I read an interview recently, I believe in CFQ magazine, where the show is trying to make all of these connections between the characters. Sawyer and Jack's dad, Hurley on the TV in Jin's flashback, Sawyer being brought in when, I forget who, one of the characters was in the police station...

You are the head of a major network: Firefly vs the new Battlestar Galactica

Battlestar Galactica of the two. Firefly was too spotty, and it probably was because of the network airing them out of order. Far better actors in it. Is Serenity even out yet? I'm doubtful that the movie will hold up as a feature film. Still, I would like to go back and watch all of Firefly...

4th times the charm? Binding Stone

Just started reading it. I think anyone reading the Eberron novels will admit that the Crimson Talisman was a fluke. A bad, bad fluke. A terrible... you get the idea. The other books have been good. They are still finding their voice, but the novels and their writers have been doing a...

    Woo Hoo! Martin news

Martin announced this several weeks back. When I first heard the new date I checked his web site to confirm, and it appears to be true. With every other release date, he would say, BUNK! You may not be psyched for it right now, however if you start rereading the first three books, when this...

    Maiden of Pain - Thoughts?

Started bad, real bad. After about half-way through the book it improved. The author found his voice, however it was too late. As has been said, it doesn't live up to the quality of some of the more recent works by FR authors. :(
