Simple Skill Challenge Fix - The 1:1 System

This was my first thought when it came to a fix as well -- success / failure pairing and a slight tweaking of DCs. I think it works far better than what's in the DMG (it's certainly more intuitive to me). However, once I read Stalker0's crit, skillful recovery, and stunt system... I found it...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

Math. It does a body good. Yes, I'll go on record as saying our 5 minute analysis is vastly superior to the design and playtesting that went into this system. Either that or we're GROSSLY misinterpreting things like what defines a successful check, what 6 successes before 3 failures mean, and...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

yes, it is yes, there is -- change the # success = 2 x failures to something more reasonable -- like X successes or X failures. Play around with the page I made and you'll see there are several easy ways to fix this.

    DnD on Ice

In many (if not most) occasions, sliding and pushing aren't actually "pushing" it's maneuvering, so no important level of kinetic energy exists. Sliding and pushing are game terms that tell you how you can maneuver a foe, not necessarily what's actually happening to them. That said, it makes...

    Offhand Attacks

Giving someone a free attack with no penalty as a minor action is WAY too good. As far as feats go, I'd be more tempted to use something like: Quick Strike Requirements: DEX 13 You must be wielding two weapons to use this feat. On a critical hit with your main-hand weapon when using a power...

    D&D 4E A simulationist DM has a few reluctant questions about 4E

As a fellow "simulationist"... The DCs scale with level also. Some tasks will be easier -- ones that were hard at level 1 will be easy at level 20. However, tasks that were designed to be moderately difficult at level 20 will be moderately difficult, so the +5 trained and +3 skill focus will...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

I updated http://www.ebonterr.com/4e/skill_challenge_test.htm so that you can now specify the average char skill value, the challenge dc, as well as the number of required successes and max failures so that you can test virtually all scenarios related to skill challenges and find what works best...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

Yes and no % chance of success diff 1: 63 % diff 2: 67.97 % diff 3: 71.01 % diff 4: 73.89 % diff 5: 76.3 % So "yes" it's a more reasonable chance of success... but "no" it's still irrational that higher difficulty challenges end up being notably easier than low difficulty ones.

    Poisons? You're kidding right?

First, the skill challenge concept from Dausuul... very interesting! I might have to use that wholesale or at least mess with the concept. Second, poisons are effectively at-will powers that cost money, so they can't (for game balance reasons) be that powerful. Basically, one standard action...

    Oa

Interrupt: "... acting before the trigger resolves. If an interrupt invalidates a triggering action, that action is lost." It then goes on to give an example about shifting out of melee range invalidating a melee attack, thus stopping it from occurring. In short, I'm just tossing my...

Does anyone actually need the DMG?

Info on the math behind the system. I'm a DM of over 30 years, and I found it very useful. Mostly for the item above as it makes it much easier for me to make homebrew stuff I know won't break down with other rules (including drastically changing the scale of magic in my world). However...

    Sneak attack and Fey Step

There are no rules I can find for it. Teleport says nothing about creating any condition (like the target is unaware of your position even for a split second), no rules for stealth saying you can do it after a teleport or similar effect, and no rules under combat advantage or flanking (such as...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

I like math, but for me, it's far quicker and more accurate to simply make a computer simulate it and give me the results. I did just that (you can find it at http://www.ebonterr.com/4e/skill_challenge_test.htm). I wrote it to run 10,000 runs of diff 1 - 5 skill challenges. It assumes...

    Arcane spell failure..

The penalty is -2 to attacks. As someone else said though, for one feat (and you get TONS), you can get +2 AC just be getting leather proficiency.

    Hardest to Visualize Power

There are so many it's hard to know where to start. Except, perhaps, writing a giant list of powers to replace or to which I'll attach new magical keywords - some power descriptions I just can't stomach. I really like 4e far better than previous versions, but there are just some things that...

    Smudges - All Core books

My 4 core books (2 copies of the PH) are all doing well and of fine quality. KotS is a piece of garbage, print-quality-wise, however.

    Power sources. What's the point?

Yes, there's Charm as a keyword for a fighter power and Illusion as a keyword for a ranger power. There may be other weird ones, but those are two examples I recall off the top of my head. I'm a 4e fan, but I don't think it's reasonable for people to "not over think it." That may work for...

    Rationalizing spell books and retraining

Replacing an existing power with a new one makes sense to me both from a game balance point of view as well as an in-character. The character simply stops practicing one thing and focuses on another, and as they level, they are able to keep a greater number of complicated maneuvers in the...

    Power sources. What's the point?

Originally, I thought of power sources as guidelines, but when they showed up as keywords... well, that implies mechanical affects - maybe not now, but potentially later. And this bothers me. Mainly it bothers me because I don't think they were used rationally in all cases. All fighter powers...

    Messed up fighter power questions

I'd treat it as an aura 1, which I think is the term for a zone that moves centered on a person. Unless there's some rule about aura vs burst that I'm unaware of. For example, one power in KotS confused me because it said 1 target in the burst X, which to me seemed like it should just be 1...
