    Post-apocalyptic fantasy: Avoiding cliche.

Thanks all for your suggestions. Definitely helping me channel things. I will avoid any Mad Max resemblances for sure. Razjah - you are really kindling my creativity here. Loving these ideas, dwelling into the implications and consequences of the volcano. I am thinking of doing an...

    Post-apocalyptic fantasy: Avoiding cliche.

Good point. I am leaning towards a megavolcano along the lines of Earth's Toba. This will result in drastic environmental changes - thickening atmosphere, cooling - which in turn will greatly hinder agriculture and any ensuing rebuilding efforts. Your point on re-builders vs. looters is also...

    Post-apocalyptic fantasy: Avoiding cliche.

I'm working on a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting. It's still very malleable, but I want to be very mindful of cliche and stereotypes. I wanted to solicit your wisdom as to what gets used too much, and anything you might like to see. Thank you!

Players Want A D20 Modern Mundane Campaign

+1 to all the Wire posts. Also, check out Sons of Anarchy (first three seasons stream on Netflix). It's about a biker gang which contains the requisite tough guys as well as a hacker and other clever cerebral types. Mostly realistic except for their teflony avoidance of prosecution.

George Lucas Blames 'Star Wars' Critics for Killing Series

The quote from Lucas is taken from an original story in the New York Times. I'm not a Lucas apologist by any means but it does shed some light on his perspective about filmmaking as a whole.

    OotS #548 is up

This strip made me laugh the most in a while...my favorite remark: "If you think for one round that Xykon gives a withered crap about the goblin race, I have a bridge to sell you to Terabithia." oh how I loathed reading that book in elementary school...

Giant Robots: Recommend me a system.

Not specifically designed for robots, but I suggest Mutants & Masterminds. The cool thing about this system is that you can link powers to any source, the flavor is independent. So you could have a robot that shoots fireballs or a wand, it's all the same rulewise. It's also really...

    Saddest Song Ever

That's what I would recommend. It was also played when FDR died. The only caveat is it is semi-frequently used in the media.

    Your favorite d20 System variant?

Mutants and Masterminds - it's about the perfect grain for me. I can represent characters exactly as I envision them, with nearly complete control.

    Penalties besides PC death

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier, but I had trouble finding any old threads about it. In my campaign PCs only die if their player decides that they should. Now I know that this can have a tendency to make players cocky because they don't fear PC death, but I am still not interested in...

[Novels] Sell me on sword and sorcery books

Thanks for all the replies so far, now I have things to add to my reading list! :) I hadn't been aware that there were two definitions of sword & sorcery, but books in either category are helpful! It's also good to see fellow readers of the classics.

What's the most amazing start to a new campaign you've ever done?

Swashbuckler adventuring in the mountains comes upon a lower level noble/knight leading a hunting party, and a reclusive barbarian prowling the woods. They find several murdered victims, and the barbarian leads them to the killer, a demon...

[Novels] Sell me on sword and sorcery books

Ok, my literary pedigree is as follows: I read a lot of classics. Steppenwolf and The Brothers Karamazov and Kafka's works are among my favorite books. I also read fantasy, my favorites are the Song of Ice and Fire series, the Amber series and anything by Gaiman. I think that sword & sorcery...
