Actually 5E does support them (altough it would break bounded accuracy, you can extrapolate the bonuses), and you can have scores in the 100s...with A LOT of magic Tomes ;)

Moreover, correct me if I'm wrong but the Identify spell gives also info on curses on the item, while the short rest does not (or possibly has the PC endure fully the curse).

Actually it looks to me like an hind and a fore leg, both on the right side, with the left fore leg raised and ready to strike, and the left hind leg hidden behind the right one. I'm sadly not into miniatures due to space costraints, but they look quite nice though...

I'd allow it: it's not that broken, and it also makes sense (the PC dons an armor made of magic and uses a shield). The 20 AC at 3rd level is pretty specific also, since it presumes an unmodified 18 DEX from the start.
