    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

That actually kinda makes sense - if you find enjoyment from looking at tremendous amounts of character build options to find the numerically best ones, a game that has a far more focused list of abilities and does a pretty good job at minimizing the gap between a non-optimal and optimal build...

Live now! Draw Steel: Crack the Sun.

Yeah, I was a little bit surprised when I saw the goal, because I am so used to significantly smaller goals for RPG crowdfunding, but after watching some of Matt's explanations it made sense, and hey, clearly wasn't a ridiculously out of reach number. And he had said that MCDM would also be...

Live now! Draw Steel: Crack the Sun.

Yeah, double your initial goal definitely shows that people are interested and want more Draw Steel goodness

"It's a machine that turns players into maniacs" That sounds like a ringing endorsement of the game to me!

Looking for Draw Steel extended play review

Yeah, that's not really a concern - the book outright mentions ways to tweak advancement, like CommodoreKong mentions. Adjusting the amount of XP, or just using Milestone leveling (in which case, Victories become more of a pacing tool) are explicitly called out in the book. And both Montages...

You could always split them up, have each player have their own mini-pool, if people are afraid of being selfish, and they can just also spend them on their allies' actions, so you still have a teamwork aspect to it.

A toggle to turn on "strict rules-as-written" mode, like AdmundfortGeographer suggested would be a good way to stop that, but I will say those examples feel more like a group culture/player trust issue, than a Codex issue. And I don't mean that as an attack on your group! Just that it is...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Could it be? Sure, but it is a deliberate choice, and it pretty quickly reinforces the borderline supers style of feel. It is not a game where you are playing as desperate mercenaries, struggling to make ends meet and a goon with a knife and a lucky shot can take you out - you start by playing...

Live now! Draw Steel: Crack the Sun.

Yeah, I wouldn't be too worried about that. From the pitch on Patreon, there is planehopping right at the start, dealing with multiple ancient eldritch entities, timey-wimey shenanigans, and entirety of the last act is on the sun. I really wouldn't call all of that "mundane".

Agreed - I love a good cooking or fishing mechanic. Cozy, slice-of-life games aren't really my cup of tea, or my group's, but we all like having something interesting to decompress with. Yeah... I'm running a Pathfinder 2e Kingmaker game right now, and outside of the one character who is a...

I think Draw Steel is actually stronger than most other games for Downtime Activities, because it gives examples that aren't just crafting, and maybe some generalized way of making money, which is a difficulty (I feel) that exists in many other games, if they even have longer-term downtime...

If you're not already familiar with Foundry (just in general, not for Draw Steel, obviously), and would be starting new with either, I'd go with Codex. Between the automation and the fact that it will definitely get everything that is released by MCDM, it's got a lot going for it. However, if...

I mean, some players, it doesn't matter how simple or complex the system, how new or familiar it may be, they just never learn the basics...

Yeah, partly due to not having a null result, where nothing happens, and partly due to even Level 1 characters being able to have potent abilities, Level 1 in Draw Steel absolutely feels better than Level 1 in a lot of other games.

Can you reskin the Fury to fit that archetype? Sure. It works for the less elemental chaos-fueled powers, but does feel weird once your swordmaster who has studied the blade long enough to cause shockwaves (or whatever) can now start to commune with Quintessence and create a portal to that...

Fabula Ultima Hardback & Bestiary Vol. 1 Kickstarter

JRPG-inspired in that it leans into many of the tropes and themes of the genre, from character classes that heavily resemble anything you would see in a Final Fantasy game, to an emphasis on bonds between your PCs, and combat which deliberately tries to emulate the classic heroes and enemies...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

Yeah, most people playing RPGs have a frame of reference for having MP or some other resource to spend to use abilities. With that in mind, you can probably build a beginner/casual-friendly character in most classes (Fury or Elementalist is probably the easiest) and they focus on just using...

What gets me playing Draw Steel and not Pathfinder 2e?

There actually kinda is, but it's not a casual thing that you can just hop into. If you complete the Learn from a Master project, you can learn one Signature Ability from another class, but that is your character spending a pretty significant amount of time learning from an NPC to get a tiny...

Draw Steel: Fake variety helps no one

It's also worth noting that by having different flavors of heroic resource, it arguably opens up additional design space. For example, Werewolves draw power from a similar source as a Fury, as such, the first time Ferocity is spent in an encounter, the Director gains a bit of Malice, but they...

Assuming I am remembering the same video from Matt, part of it is also MCDM, right now, doesn't seem super interested in another "mundane" (as in completely non-supernatural) class. I'm sure somebody else has, or will, come out with another "mundane" class at some point, but I actually really...
