Basically Fantasy War/skirmish games are my real thing and i was really interested in playing DND minis but then discovered it isnt being produced by WOTC But by DDM a fan run set-up this nerved me slightly so i was thinking of using the Monster Manual and DnD/GW Figs so i could play some nice little warband type skirmishs
Using the stats in the Monster Manual for the monsters fighting.
Do you guys think this will work?

Have you had a look at the new Otherworld Fantasy Skirmish Game?
It is very much based on Old School, 1st edition dungeon fighting.

Frankly: No.
DDM rules were really good, though. The D&D Guild had been doing an excellent job converting the D&D Minis to the new ruleset and introduced a bunch of new stuff, like magic items.

Dungeon Command is also a very good game, although some complain because it doesn't use dice.

If you don't mind the Star Wars theme, I also enjoyed playing the 'Imperial Assault' Skirmish game. In fact it reminded me quite a bit of Dungeon Command except it uses dice in addition to cards.
