Okay, finally have a reasonable character together. Was having too much difficulty with a melee build idea, so ended up as a Mage. Character is a fire-blaster, ranged AoE specialist (less control, more like a area striker).
Will keep melee ideas in reserve, in case the giants make quick work of this character, as she is quite squishy.

[sblock= background]
Miranda is the daughter of a powerful wizardess and an efreet noble. She was raised in her father's citadel, in an inhospitable land far from the realms of mortal men. Her heritage earned her many enemies among the efreet, though, and her parents sent her to learn from the same arcane instructors who had tutored her mother many years ago. Miranda proved to be a gifted wizard herself, and her ancestry made her especially skilled with fire spells. For several years, she traveled through the lands of men, learning how to harness her arcane powers. In time, she even traveled to the land where her mother had been born- only to find that the country was now tormented by raiding giants. Declaring herself an emissary of the efreet courts, she offered her assistance to the local ruler, to help deal with the massive troublemakers. [/sblock]

If you're gonna go with a semi-controller there, you might wanna pick up a few repositioning tricks. You know, so you can move people into Deacon's threat range. That'd help out with defense abut if you're up for that.

Interesting idea though. I think our party'll looks quite complete!

Slowly working on a detailed inspection of completed characters (i.e. manually building them in the CB, mostly so I don't get completely blindsided by abilities I've never heard of). So far I've only finished Wik and Gwenn (halfway done with Lucan). Scotley I notice you just used generic Hide armor instead of Earthhide; might as well use the masterwork armor for the free +1 Fortitude. drothgery you probably want to consider Cunning Stalker over Flash of the Blade.

I've also had a chance to read everyone's backstories. I think you have a great dynamic coming together. The Hill Giant Stedding is located in the foothills of the Crystalmist Mountains. I'm thinking that mountain ranges make good national borders, so the range probably borders on at least two countries. The giants have been active for a while, with their initial assaults falling on less powerful and less civilized areas. Recently (having largely despoiled those lands), they've turned their attention to lands held by lords with more resources, and those lords have responded

Some fairly obvious potential connections:
Wik: you come from one of the countries that borders the mountains. Your village probably represented the outskirts of the nation, and was the first human settlement to be destroyed by the giants. I'm also planning to exploit your previous encounters with the giants to help establish some plot points. One major point: the Marauders, though ultimately scattered, were able to establish the advantages of a small elite group. A large band of mercenaries would have to confront the many patrols of giants and their allies, but a small group can slip through the patrols and strike directly at the Steading. This is part of why adventurers, not armies, are currently being used to counter the threat.

Gwenn: your country also borders the mountains, but is probably not the same as Wik's homeland. Your base is in the Crystalmist mountains, so you're concerned about the giants even if they aren't directly threatening your former home. I think it's best if your country is the home of the lords who are sending adventurers against the giants (and therefore who hires the group), but I'm willing to go with other ideas.

Brook: I assume the rebellion you were investigating is Gwenn's?

Is everyone ok with those ideas? Anyone want to name those countries, or should I come up with something? Deacon, did you want to be from one of these countries, or from somewhere more distant? Your initial location strongly influences Lucan's, I think. Miranda and Aelar have well-established home points; is Miranda's mother from the land that has just come under siege, the heavily damaged country, or some other idea? Aelar, I don't see a super-obvious hook for you, but we could probably assume that the giants are disturbing the local ecology on top of their predations on civilized areas.

I was thinking that I was originally somewhere a little more distant -- still within traveling range from these kingdoms though, and have spent most the past years in these ones. I don't find it a stretch that an assassin could have traveled to a foreign land to ply his trade.

Still, if it makes sense that one of the more distant or remote countries still bordering the mountains was Deacon's homeland, that could work.

That is correct, Brook was in the area investigating Gwenn's rebellion.

I am not too sure how much he has found out regarding names and series of evens yet though

tiornys, sounds good to me. I'll leave it to you or one of the others to come up with a name for the country as nothing comes to mind this morning. Should have had more coffee. I'll look into the Earthhide, can't have too much fortitude. THX.

Yeah, Cunning Stalker looks like it's strictly better.

That works; I kind of wanted the nominal powers that be to see working with Gwenn as something of a deal with the devil (even if she isn't particularly fiendish).

I don't have any ideas...

Kay, so this is basically my envisioning of our party, as requested by some of our group. I just kept going for the rest of it. (I am not by any means a professional artist, so feel free to discount my imaginings.)

I did like the idea of Wik with the goatee. I had an image ready, but there was something missing that I couldn't pin down. Also, Aelar's the first elf that looks like an elf that I've made.

As for more unusual races, coming up with a half-efreet was fun (those erase marks are from mathematics work, they don't say what you think they do), but Brook gave me a challenge in that I didn't really know how much he was an adventurer and how much he was a monk. I ended up leaning towards monk, but still not sure.

On a different note, I have a few pre-generated city names on my DM screen I can offer up. Among the ones that might fit are:

Kar-Hallarn, Siobahn, Aramus, Durnheim, Cyrus, Aiden, Callir's Point, Aldurn, Lotheim, Isthiel, Aquitor, Wardskeep.
