My two encounters were linked. My exploration/interaction encounter had an elf noble and an ancient temple. Basically the elf was a former Thayan slave saved by the Zhentarim. Now a minor zora in Mulmaster, she has been ordered to find an artifact of Bane. The Zhentarim hired the PCs to hedge their bets.

The combat encounter has the same elf noble and ancient temple, plus a secret door, skeletons, and a manticore. The elf knows of the secret door, and is trying to lead the PCs to their deaths to escape with the artifact. As soon as the artifact is brought into the room, Bane's lingering magic raises several skeletons to attack all creatures in the room, including the manticore, who just wants his next meal.

My encounters were linked as well. My first encounter was exploration of an area surrounding a ruined temple and the second encounter was combat at the temple itself.

I also linked them. Convince the noble you're on her side, then escort her back. Exploring the temple she's hiding in has potential to trigger a skeleton attack.

I even went so far as to include adjustments for stronger party, and a map of the (small) ruined temple.

I received my rejection letter today, so I guess I can share my encounters.

I had an exploration encounter with a small ruined temple to Boccob. There were five pillars, each engraved with a different scene. One of them had a secret door into a tomb below the temple, where if the sarcophagus was disturbed a trap went off and would suffocate the party unless they beat four obstacles within four minutes. Also there was an elf noble who'd triggered a trap on the altar and gotten trapped inside a magic circle.

My combat encounter was in a chasm spanned by a few rope bridges hung on rock pillars. A couple of orcs would shoot arrows at the party as they tried to cross, and a manticore would swoop down and attack on the wing. To make matters worse, there was a once-a-round chance of a sudden gust of wind that might blow people into the depths. It was a killer. It also included an elf noble who was in trouble. Because I love tormenting elves sometimes.

That was a bit repetitive, having damseled elf nobles in both encounters. It was only a couple days later that I thought of the seed of a negotiation with a haughty elf noble to let you through some part of the forest, but it was too late then.

In my dealings within the entertainment industry you will see a lot of rejection letters coming back to you. They all have their certain "formula's" on what they are looking for.

So take heart on what you created. It might not be bad writing. It might not fit what they are looking for because of their criteria. So be proud in what you wrote.

And continue on your journey.

If I had to listen to all of the rejection notices and critiques from others that say you were never going to get anywhere, I be a fat old man eating cheese puffs in a shared room apartment. Instead I'm a fat old man eating cheeze whiz with crackers. And every week I'm laughing all the way to the bank. Because I believed in myself that in the end I would succeed. And I did.

The bottom line is...
You just have to have faith in yourself and what you are doing in any endeavor you are doing. If you do, will go far.
