Modiphius uses 2d20 as their system logo. If WotC was going to be up in arms about people using a variation of d20, they would have with Modiphius.

I would expect a system described as "5d20" to be one that uses 5d20 mechanically, much as GURPS could be described as a 3d6 system and (most versions of) Traveller could be described as 2d6 systems.

If not for that possible legal thing, your idea wasn't too bad, honestly. I might have argued for 5ed20, so as not to make folks think it is a game that uses 5 d20s, but it was functional.

We might go with a variation on that - since we usually refer to the underlying core mechanical design as an "engine", something like "5e Engine" might be clear enough.

That kind of abuses how lots of games have a fifth edition, so they can't trademark that, but due to ubiquity is clear enough to folks who are in the space.
