OOC: Ripnek too. He is smart enough to wait for the right opportunity to strike back at Karok, and this is not it. Yet. ;)

Karok describes the immediate path forward, and Ripnek slinks off ahead of the group. Once or twice as the sun rises over the mountains, Ripnek runs out of directions and waits for the rest of you to catch up, whereupon Karok gives him the next turns and landmark. As for the scouting, it should be a piece of cake to identify an Ogre lair -- the smell alone is a pretty fair indicator. If not that, the worthless baubles, none-too-fresh furs, and rotting food are the usual giveaways. Even if by some stroke of chance, Ripnek misses all the signs, at least he can rely on sneaking through the mountains well enough to go unnoticed...

"URGH! Gorp Hungry! You bring Gorp food?" Ripnek's thoughts are interrupted as a monstrous rag-clad Ogre steps out of a nearly invisible cave to confront him. "Or maybe you is food? Gorp hungry." You can hear his stomach, which is about the height of your chin, growling as if to underscore his words.

OOC: The rest of you are too far away to be aware of this. The Ogre is carrying a greatclub in one hand, and some kind of horned skull on a rope in the other.

Ripnek hesitates. He is not sure he can outrun an ogre, but fighting it, especially alone, seems even less appealing. He decides to try another thing.

"Yes, Ripnek brings food. My friends carry more food still, shall we wait for them?"

The bugbear prepares himself to run away as soon as the ogre makes any sudden moves.

Drutha picked her way across the boulder field and then fell in at the back of the group as they made their way following the orc. She kept her eyes open for any trouble, and especially for signs of ogres as Ripnek moved out ahead to scout.

OOC: Moon Moon wanted to dismiss the goat, does not have any 1st level spells left, and I had thought the plan was to rest after crossing.

Also the odd situation where goodberry would have solved things.

OOC: Yes, the Animal Friendship spell ended when Karok blasted the goat. So in that sense it has been "dismissed." But after Moon Moon healed it (essentially, brought it back to life), it seems to have attached itself to him.

As far as I can tell the plan is to rest at the edge of the mountains, a few hours after the crossing (based on the few posts starting here). It would have been a done deal except for a couple spectacularly bad rolls. Still, hopefully soon. :)

Ripnek rummages through his backpack, eventually producing his trail rations.

"Ripnek gives you good food. But Ripnek's friends have better food. Tasty food. You like tasty food?"

The bugbear talks and moves as slowly as he dares, trying to occupy the ogre while hoping his allies get here quickly.

Ripnek has had some time to get ahead of the party and scout -- best guess they're nearly 10 minutes behind you.

Gorp tastes your trail rations with an inquisitive look, then frowns and spits them out. "Gah! Tastes like leather! You holding back." He tries to swipe your entire pack to check for himself -- which is a confusing one to resolve but I'll call it Sleight of Hand based on Str instead of Dex because he's trying to muscle it away instead of sneaking it. His target number is your Dex (16):

Backpack Grab: 1D20+4 = [11]+4 = 15

So: you can give it a little yank to keep it out of his grasp, or opt to "let the Wookie win" and release the pack to him...

Ripnek pulls his pack away, out of reach of the ogre.

"Hey! You greedy!"

The bugbear hesitates for only a moment, then tosses his pack away from the ogre and starts running away as soon as he can. His idea is to get back to his allies, but if the ogre is distracted by the backpack, Ripnek might get an attack in with his shortsword...
