D&D 5E [IC] The New World (Volo Monsters)

Gorp is infuriated when Ripnek snatches the pack away. "Gorp WANT!" But then Ripnek flees in one direction and tosses the backpack in another, and you can see the Ogre freeze in indecision. After a moment he swings the hand with the greatclub toward Ripnek, and drops the skull in the other hand to reach for the pack, trying to manage both and actually accomplishing neither.

OOC: Ripnek could certainly take the opportunity to jump back in for an attack, but if he does he would lose the immediate chance to make good his escape.

Gorp does not pursue. Ripnek hears him tearing into the pack before the distance grows too great.

A few minutes later, Ripnek hears the party ahead.

Back with the rest of you, things have been going smoothly. Nert believes he's been able to cover any traces of your passing.

"Ogre!" Ripnek states simply, catching his breath. "Hungry ogre took my backpack. We should sneak around it, or attack together."

Saashala made an annoyed sound, clicking her tongue against the roof of her mouth.

"If we fight, we may lose someone...and we won't be at full strength for the fight against the invaders. Everyone drop some food, and we'll get away. When the ogre finds food sitting out, he should forget about trying to track us down."

Moon Moon shrugs. "They no take candle. Darkness take them."

"If they want food, tell them where cart will be. Food and supplies, supplies and food. Maybe they do our job for us?"

Nert could barely contain his pleasure at seeing a big in fear of a big big.

"If they want food, tell them where cart will be. Food and supplies, supplies and food. Maybe they do our job for us?" said Moon moon.

"Hmmm, good plan."added Nert, "Though dangerous, bigbigs not so good at taking orders and likely to eat messenger."

"Indeed. If you, Moon-Moon, believe you can convince an angry ogre to pause long enough to listen to you...and then to believe you enough to leave you alone...and to turn away from food that's right in front of it in favor of food that may or may not be somewhere far away that it will have to work to obtain...be my guest."

"Though I do think I should warn you that all available learning suggests such a plan has a very low chance to succeed."

"We need to keep moving," Korak said. "We will try to avoid this ogre, and if we cannot, we will try to reason with it and see if it will help us. If it will not, we will kill it. It is that simple."

It wasn't that simple, but Karok knew there wasn't exactly any other options at this point. Ogres weren't impossible to kill. Just very hard. And he only had one spell left for the day. He would be hard pressed to defeat a creature such as an Ogre alone, but with the help of the others, it is a distinct possibility.

You've spent hours crossing a pretty small section of the mountains -- it's certainly possible to avoid one creature if you try. As you near the edge of the mountains, there's less plain rock face, and more tree cover on the slopes. It's not dense enough to impede your travel in any way, but visibility isn't what it was higher up. So long as you don't get within a couple hundred yards of the ogre, it's unlikely to see you.

[sblock="Ripnek"]
The only problem is that Gorp's cave is hiding along the only good trail down the particular mountainside you were heading down. It would take perhaps an extra hour to cross to the next mountainside over and find an alternate trail there.

The party could avoid the diversion by attempting to make your own way straight down the mountainside, but it's steep enough to be risky for anyone without good nature or climbing skills. If anyone lost control, they'd end up needing to thump against a tree to stop themselves.[/sblock]
