Are we on a hill overlooking this cave?
Currently you're a few minutes up the mountain trail from the Ogre's cave, at the fork where you decide whether to head down the Ogre's way or dodge over to avoid. If you want to go down the trail until you find him, just say so (and make a Stealth DC 9 check if you want to approach undetected).

If you want to try to approach the cave from above or below on the mountainside (as opposed to from the trail), that will take a skill check due to the steep terrain. I'd say Athletics DC 12 to navigate the rocky slopes safely, and then the same Stealth DC 9 if you want to get close to the Ogre or his cave without being noticed. If you fail the Athletics check, you'll go tumbling down the slope a bit until you can catch yourself on a tree. Besides being noisy you'll need someone upslope to rescue you (with their own Athletics check or a rope).

Drutha shook her head. “We have the time to go around,” she said. “No sense risking a confrontation on a narrow mountain trail.” She considered the lay of the land. “Could we cause a rockslide over the cave? That might block the trail though and we’d end up going around anyway.”

It would be easy enough to create a "rubble-slide" of the loose and fist-sized stuff. To try to cause a more meaningful rockslide, you'd need several of you working, and probably you'd need to start higher up the mountain so it would have some time to gather force as it went. With more distance between you, aiming it isn't as straightforward. On a "hit" it would be pretty easy to sweep the Ogre off the mountain side if he's out, but it would take a pretty impressive rockslide to cover his whole cave if he's inside, and that would certainly cover the trail too (though you could clamber over the rubble afterward).

OOC: So... intriguing idea, but I'd have to call it a long shot. Magic would help. :)

Though Ripnek is muttering about how the Ogre wasn't that tough after all, Moon Moon has ideas for how to take down "just one," and Saashala is practicing the "Friends" incantation under her breath, the consensus seems to be to go around. The Ogre isn't the goal, after all.

By the time you've spent an extra hour trudging around and down the mountain, it seems like it's been more like three. A cold rain makes any activity increasingly uncomfortable, exhaustion is setting in, and you're starting to figure maybe the Ogre wouldn't have been so bad. But your glimpses of the grassy lowlands below pull you on, and the ground beneath your feet slowly changes from largely rock to all dirt. Just about the time you figure you must be nearly there, you stumble across the perfect camp site. There's a small copse of evergreens nestled into one of the last curves of the mountain, giving cover from the trail. It has steep rock at the back, with the occasional protrusion that gives some cover from the weather, and a trickle of fresh water flowing down from above.

If you'd like to take a long rest for the remainder of the daylight, what are the plans for watches?

OOC: For a long rest, you need to spend 8 hours of which any individual can stand watch for at most 2 hours. So you need at least four of you to take a watch for full coverage.

Shortly after you stop, the rain turns to snow, in case that has any impact on your plans. It is not heavy, but it is steady through the day. It makes for a cold rest.

[sblock="Ripnek"]Having lost your pack, you've lost your food as well. You can go 5 days without food before truly suffering, but it will hardly leave you feeling fighting fit. You can borrow, forage, or go without for now. If you forage during the rest (Survival DC 10), you'll have to either do it during your watch, not take a watch, or only get the benefit of a short rest. On a foraging success, you'd get 1d6+1 days worth of food.[/sblock]

Ripnek is obviously grumpy about losing his pack. The bugbear moves over to Nert, standing over the goblin with a threatening pose.

"Ripnek is hungry. Give Ripnek some food!"

OOC: Ripnek is willing for guard duty while resting.

"I will take first watch," Karok says. He wants to take some time to watch the storm in peace.

Saashala, huddling in as many layers of clothes as she can muster, sits in an irritated heap near the fire. She's not really 'cold blooded' in the literal sense, but hailing from a more tropical clime makes her ill suited for dealing with the cold.

"What's the matter, Ripnek?" she calls over across the fire. "Need a goblin to do your hunting for you?"

She waves a hand. "Go hunt. Someone else can take a watch."

Nert finds himself a bit of shelter under a rock outcrop and set about turning it into home for the night, just as he gets back from gathering some saplings and brush, Ripnek looms over him, "Ripnek is hungry. Give Ripnek some food!"

Nert glares back for a second, he is still a small, alone with mostly bigs and no friends. Nert rumages in his pack and produces some dried meat and bread, not yet stale. Handing it to Ripnek, Nert wonders weather if it's a price worth paying to see a big humulated by a bigbig?

Ripnek rips the food out of the goblins hands, walks a few steps away and sits down. He hungrily eats his prize, ignoring the yuan-ti. After filling his belly somewhat, the bugbear lies down and starts to sleep on the bare ground.

Karok saw the bugbear's display of superiority against the goblin, and understood it. But this day had done much to turn his mind away from the old ways of thinking. He had done something similar to the bugbear. It had not garnered him much trust. Then, when the Kobold had attacked him, the diminutive creature had proven itself effective in combat. It is possible this goblin would be the same. None should be taken for granted.

Karok knew he needed allies in this group, and his time among the human pirates had shown him ways to do that.

As the bugbear fell asleep, Karok moved in behind the goblen. When the smaller creature turned to look at him, Karok handed him a ration from his own pack, to replace the one the bugbear had stolen. He did not say anything to the goblin, merely nodding as he handed it over, then Karok walked over to where Saashala was huddling.

"I would speak with you," he said to her softly as he sat next to her, stoking the fire. "My tribes value strength above all. It is a constant struggle for every member, as the larger prey on the weaker, and the weakest are culled from the whole. I know this is the way for many of our peoples. As I look at our alliance, I cannot help but believe that a time will come when we must decide who is in charge, and who is subservient.

"I cannot allow us to fail in our quest," he went on, not letting her speak yet. "We are not of each other's tribes, so we judge each other based on the strengths of our own people. Thus, we each see the others as inferior. If it comes to blows again, I fear that one or more of us will die as another tries to take power. This will weaken us, and could very well destroy our quest altogether."

He looked up at the snake woman's eyes. "We must find another way."
