Leif's 4E Adventuring in Encastulum [OOC 1]

Maybe I don't know Scotley, but fortunately a forum post is forever! Hm... tiefling wizard, eh? And a fellow bridge player to boot!

Hey Negin, Ghavdrash looks cool. Are you a duplicate bridge player or do you just play informally? I only know one other bridge player/role-player. Meeting either is good, but both, now that's a special day.

Purely informal – it's how I used to spend my lunch hours in high school, attempting sometimes-ridiculous contracts. It's been an off-and-on thing ever since, since none of my friends play (confirming your theory I suppose). Ah well: "into each person's life a few down tricks must fall."

Happy to meet another quirky wizard, but I don't know that we have to follow categories so strictly if there's something else you'd rather try...

Bridge is certainly great fun. I minored in spades in college playing most every afternoon and when I got to grad school they had some free lessons. I was hooked. I played a lot in competition back in my single days. When my son was born I stopped playing for about 5 years. That's also about the time I stopped playing D&D and such on a regular basis. Fortunately, I found games on EN World and as you can see if you did a little search I've been pretty active here. I also yanked a bunch of my ole buddies like Leif onto EN World to game with me. I did start playing bridge again a couple years ago, but I don't get to play often and I haven't gotten back to the level I was at when I played frequently in competition. Though we did manage to make the regional semifinals in the Grand National Teams this year.

Anyway I think that's enough of a thread-jack, I do love wizards and I've not really had much chance to play one much in 4e. I'm sure I can come up with something interesting given a little time to wrap my head around it.

Heh. In college my floormates' choices were Hearts, Spades, and Pinochle. Hearts & Pinochle I still play on occasion, but once you've learned Bridge I think there's no going back to Spades... Congrats on making it to regional semifinals!

OK, back to dragons and the group... I have some Q's, since I'm brand new to online gaming like this. I drew up a template similar to what LW4E does, with fluff, math, but with a 22-pt build. Is that the right way to go (assuming I want to steer clear of another DnDI account for the meantime)? Should I send that all over to Leif? Or post the rest here? Should I get a dice-rolling account somewhere?

Thanks!

You should just post what you have here. Leif isn't usually a stickler for format as long as he can find everything and it is mechanically correct with the rules. EN World's built in dice roller was lost in the 'Great Breach' last winter and as yet no replacement is available in house.

www.invisiblecastle.com and http://www.coyotecode.net/roll/ are generally the go to choices around here. Getting an account at one or both of these is a good idea.

A typical game has four threads:
The initial planning thread (this one).
A Rogue's Gallery thread for the final approved characters, a few DM's resources and party treasure.
The actual game thread (the IC or in character thread)
And an informal OOC (out of character thread)

Leif may of course choose to do something different. Either way any additional threads will be started by him and referenced in this thread. He might well start new IC threads for each adventure since we'll be leveling up significantly between adventures for a while.

You will need an acct at Invisible Castle for all the dice-rolling stuff, but that won'r happen until the game starts. Characters are to be built with the Standard Array of 16, 14, 13 12, 11, 10, plus racial adjustments.

We will have those four threads, and I like the idea of starting a new IC thread whenever we make those 'jumps' in level.

Sure, Redclaw, and welcome! I've added you to the roster in Post # 26, although at first I mistakenly said there that you would be playing a possible "Warelord," which is a sub-class of merchant, if I remember correctly, which would not be terribly inaccurate, I suppose, since you're from NW Arkansas in the general vicinity of the fabled home of Sam Walton, progenitor of Wal-Mart.

I'm hesitant to say that you'll be the final piece to our puzzle here, but I don't want to get into a situation of having very many more PCs than 5. Alternates would be welcome, though.

Ah, standard distribution changes it a bit. Ghavdrash is going to be a little dumber, but fortunately less like to trip over his feet while charging his way to the front.

[sblock=Description]Ghavdrash is a rust-bucket of a dragonborn, relatively squat and thick-limbed, with bright golden eyes and a wicked-looking, somewhat serrated saber on his back. Unlike some dragonborn you may know, Ghavdrash is generally unruffled and calm in demeanor. A jade medallion, etched with a bright red eye of Ioun, hangs from his neck.[/sblock]

[sblock=Background]Ghavdrash hails from the Lorewing clan, a minor clan of Dragonborn
which was originally tasked with preserving the knowledge and deeds of
the old Dragonborn Empire, founded by both followers of Bahamut and
priests of Ioun. After the fall of the Empire and the scattering of
the dragonborn, the Lorewing clan clung to the teachings of Ioun ever
more fervently, and became more esoteric in their
practices. Soothsaying, practiced through bloody and bizarre rituals,
became popular, and eventually the clan fell under the leadership of a
series of prophets and zealots who foretold a great future for the
clan, as the future authors and leaders of a new Dragonborn Empire,
cleansed of the sins of the past. Since then, though the clan remains
devoted to the pursuit of justice wherever it travels, particularly
among the warrior caste, the clan's relationship with Bahamut has
faded to irrelevance.

In the meantime, a clan's gotta eat, and seeing as how dragonborn are
not all that much in demand for their research skills or soothsaying
abilities (well, at least not after an outsider has gotten a glimpse
of their rituals!), the clan's warriors have focused on that which
dragonborn do best: fighting wars. The warriors are the economic
lifeblood of the clan, serving as mercenaries and bodyguards as the
clan travels from place to place.

The Lorewing Clan have resided in the region of Encastulum for over
eighty years, having built an enclave in the hills about a half-day
travel from the capital. Ghavdrash's father, Igmach, is one of the
most prominent warriors of the clan and has served as an officer in
the military, and more recently as a member of the King's guard, with
distinction for years.

From an early age it became clear early on that Ghavdrash had neither
the aptitude for a loremaster, nor any particular gift at
soothsaying. His father therefore took him in hand and trained him in
the ways of the devout warrior. Like his father before him, Ghavdrash
maintains a devout belief that the applied knowledge of self and blade
through struggle are no less valuable to Ioun than the knowledge
acquired from books, and that only through the preserved experience of
the ages will the Dragonborn Empire be restored.

Ghavdrash and Firil know each other through their fathers. A few years
ago, Igmach led an brigade on a fog-drenched assault on a massed
Trosselin army in the marshlands, when they found themselves
unexpectedly flanked by another large unit of Trosselin light
infantry. In a completely uncoordinated act of serendipity, to the
back of the flanking Trosselin, an entire clan of nomadic tribesmen,
the Iron Wolf clan, fell on the flanking unit and decimated
them. Igmach's brigade then pressed forward and routed the rest. In
the celebrations following the battle, Igmach met Firil's father and
they became fast friends. During their father's interactions at court
since, Ghavdrash and Firil have met, and maintain a friendly rivalry.
