I have a huge text file full of ideas for these kinds of items lifted from the threads on the subject that tend to come up from time to time on 4chan. Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Rod of Rod: Points to the nearest guy named Rod when the command words 'Hey, Rod' are spoken.
  • A bag that, once per day at a random hour, dispenses 1d100 sweetrolls.
  • Book of Unscrupulous Narration: This intelligent book records everything that has happened in the past 24 hours around it. The book has a tendency to describe things in easily misunderstood ways. For example, instead of saying the party made camp while the paladin went on a short ride to a city, it will say the party slept together except for the paladin, who was too busy mounting his steed.
  • A small metal box that, when opened, shouts the answer to a question that someone, somewhere in the world just asked.
  • Dancer's Greaves: Metal footwear that makes any form of combat maneuver into a ballet move. Watch as your Fighter leaps gracefully away from that Orc's axe!
  • Blade of induced paranoia: A sword that, while sheathed, makes the bearer hear muffled voices nearby. When drawn, it goes silent.
hey could i get a copy of that text file?

The Most Useless Device - a small box, that when activated, summons a Genie that deactivates it. It has infinite charges.

The Encyclopedia Magica - contains all known spells, but not for the edition of the game you're currently playing.

Frivolous compared to magic swords, but still useful to the right person:

Mirror of Impeccability
Once per day, a person can ask this full-length mirror how to dress and groom oneself perfectly for a specific occasion. The mirror, which contains the trapped soul of a renowned stylist, shows the person exactly how he or she should appear. A rising socialite's secret weapon.

Cuckoo Clock of Complaints
Every hour on the hour, a wooden bird emerges from this charming clock and repeats the last complaint that it heard, mimicking the griper's voice perfectly.

Tedious Stone
This stone speaks when addressed. It is inattentive, has a poor memory, an irritating voice and is a horrible conversationalist. However, it can be coerced into spying for up to an hour, at which point it drifts off into inane daydreams. It will recall what ensued in that hour with reasonable accuracy and detail.

Greedy Well
Any mundane coins dropped into this well vanish forever.

Liar's Flagon
When someone takes a drink from this flagon, it's guaranteed that the next thing they say will be a flat-out lie.
