A zealot is a person who is fervently, passionately devoted to a faith or idea, not a monster. There is no real mechanical way in DnD terms to designate that a person is such, although certainly classes with divine connections are more likely. Its simply a matter of role playing.
However, given that these are going to be followers I, as DM, would want there to be something like a feat to indicate their devotion like this:
Holy Zeal [Divine]
Prerequsite: Fervent devotion to a single god, person, nation, or concept.
Benifit: Your passion protects you from harm. You gain a +3 bonus to saves while acting in defense of your cause.
Special: The DM determines whether or not your actions are specifically in defense of your cause or not.
Now, to make sense in game your followers would need to see you as either
a) a representative of some great power (like a god) -which is great if you are a divine caster of any sort, but can work if you are an accomplished arcanist who worships a god of magic, or a fighter who worships a god of strength or war, etc.
b) have some reason to be personally devoted to you. If you are a heroic PC then perhpas these are the survivors of a village you saved or an extended family that owes you a life debt of somekind. If you are a villanous PC with a high CHA or good deception skills/spells you might have duped a group of followers into beleiving that you are a prophet/avatar/messiah/god and started your own cult.
