This week’s sampling of TTRPG crowdfundings features campaigns ends between October 10 to 13. There’s a lot of good projects on Kickstarter, Backerkit, Crowdfundr, GameFound, GameOnTabletop, IndieGoGo, and more ending on October 12th.

Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms - A 5e Tome.png

Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms - A 5e Tome from DnD Shorts
  • END DATE: Thu, October 12 2023 10:59 AM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $60 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of this book
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project connected with fans: $2,000,000 raised so far, and this campaign is likely to end in the Top 10 of the million dollar RPG crowdfunding campaigns. That’s impressive. This 5e sourcebook offers 350 pages of “kaiju battles, crafting mechanics, and player options inspired by ancient folklore and yokai legend.” That means an original gargantuan monster combat system, new creatures, elemental bender classes that sound like Avatar: The Last Airbender, combo attack options, and more. The creative team includes a number of culturally connected creators, individuals that have roots in the culture that inspired this setting, and that’s important. Itr brings a unique voice and authenticity to the work. That’s part of the reason this, a project that brings East Asian influences to 5e, is finding such a large audience. If you’re looking for ways to fight big monsters, this sourcebook may interest your gaming table.

CAPERS Cyberpunk RPG.png

CAPERS Cyberpunk RPG from NerdBurger Games
  • END DATE: Thu, October 12 2023 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): CAPERS
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $40 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book
  • ADDITIONAL REPORTING: I interviewed Craig Campbell about this project (here)
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Commit super crimes in the name of freedom! In an alternate cyberpunk present, register your powers with the corps or they will hunt and arrest you. This TTRPG is cyberpunk with superpowers, using the same card-based system as CAPERS and all of its follow-ups. This brilliant system uses gambling logic as you draw cards, one at a time up to your max, to get the best card for your current action. Do you stand on a 10 of Hearts or push your luck for a better result? If you’re a fan of cyberpunk and well-supported RPG engines, CAPERS Cyberpunk is waiting for you.

Scoundrels of Brixton- Issue 2.png

Scoundrels of Brixton: Issue 2 from RPG Ramblings Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, October 12 2023 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Compatible with Cepheus Engine and the little black books Traveller RPG
  • PROJECT TYPE: RPG zine
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $3 for the PDF of the zine
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Because the first Scoundrels of Brixton zine used the Cepheus Engine, I covered its Kickstarter back in April. In August at Gen Con, I randomly ran into Jeffrey Jones of Scoundrels of Brixton. We talked about this Kickstarter, and he shared a copy of his zine (which is awesome). Here we are in October and the campaign is going strong. This series explores the Brixton solar system, focusing on the crimes you’ll commit while you’re there. The motto is, “Make your game criminal.” The zine focuses on the Cepheus Engine, it can be used in classic Traveller and, with a bit of preparation, Mothership. If you need a solar system for your criminal enterprise, this zine is priced right to check out.

Curse of the Usurper- RPG 5e.png

Curse of the Usurper- RPG 5e from Tomb Guardians

  • PROJECT TYPE: Adventure
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $73 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of all three books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This week there are two 1,000-page plus 5e projects. That’s a lot of material, and both are offering a lot of pages for your dollar. Curse of the Usurper claims to be the “LARGEST 5e adventure/campaign EVER WRITTEN with over 1000+ pages, 50+ maps, 50+ minis, and so much more!” With voiceovers, music, and lots of content, you’ll start in a port city but have plenty of sandbox to roam. Coming as three books plus supplemental material, you’re getting a lot of adventure and some fun fantasy ideas. Check out the Kickstarter for details on the campaign for levels 1 to 15 and additional reviews.

This book offers space and sci-fi as you don a mech. You’ll travel and fight your way through space in your mech with new classes, mechanics, and AI companions. Plus, this book features a sci-fi bestiary. If you think mechs would be a fun way to play Tales of the Valiant or Pathfinder Second Edition, this book may be for you.

  • PROJECT TYPE: Starter set

While many gamers want less crunch in their D&D experience, some go for more features because it means there’s more directions to go in combat. This boxed set offers a peek into the A5E system, letting you try a more robust RPG experience. If you want to sample what EN Publishing has created, this boxed set is what you’ve been waiting for with a to-the-point rules booklet, adventures, pre-gens and more. Don’t let this boxed set pass you by.

And to show that a failed Kickstarter won't stop a dedicated creator... Wagham was a campaign setting I was tracking a few months ago. It was, of course, unsuccessful. But lo and behold, it just popped up on DriveThruRPG.

Also... I'm still not sure what I think of the new DTRPG website.
