Watched the first episode and really enjoyed it. But I admit to some bias, I've read all 5 of the books and think they're great trad. SF. Like Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle but updated for the 21st century, ie less racism and sexism.

The production values are, ahem, astronomical (for SyFy, at least). The whole thing just screams quality and attention to detail. The one downside is it's a bit demanding. There's a lot of setting information to digest, and the show is -- admirably -- very setting-forward to start off. But the character's in the novels are great (and likable), and so far the casting choices look solid. But it's a big cast in 3 separate story lines that will take a while to intersect. But should be plenty of spaceship & space battle porn to sugar the pill. Best thing about it is the plot will go places, and huge changes happen to the setting.

The one thing it's isn't, contra to some of the initial marketing and buzz, is Game of Thrones in space. There will be Big Damn Heroes. Who survive. I'd say it's closer to Babylon 5, with a dusting of nBSG.

I've never read the books, nor heard of them before this show was announced.

I watched the first episode online, a couple of weeks back, then watched it again last night. It hits the ground running hard, from a narrative standpoint. The Belter slang caught me off guard, so I'm sure that I missed some things that a reader might have caught. The tech portrayed reminds me very much of the old Traveller RPG, just without the jump drive. So far it looks good and the second episode will be showing tonight.

Spoiler alert!

For information about the novel, Leviathan Wakes, which was adapted for the series, follow the link to that name, or to "The Expanse", on wikipedia.

Be forewarned: The wikipedia information spoils the overall arc and a number of of details.

The authors are Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S. A. Corey.

Thx!

..I watched the first half of the episode last night. There seemed to be a lot of stuff taken from other movies and tv series. I got bored half way through it and changed the channel.

That's not a good sign, unless...

Do you like stuff we all like or are you like that one person who hates everything everybody else likes?

...I really don't know how to answer that. I have always thought that my likes are pretty average. I don't get any kind of thrill out of hyper-analyzing movies or intentionally trashing them to provoke others, if that is what you mean. To me, this episode just seemed very similar to a lot of other stuff the sci-fi channel has put out. Not really bad, just kind of run-of-the-mill.

I haven't heard of the books either and I missed the first episode of The Expanse. I did watch the first half of the second episode but got bored with the ship crew pretty fast even though I liked the private investigator parts. I turned it over an watched the second part of Limitless.
