With 666 planes of the Abyss to populate, in theory we still need several hundred more.

Not every plane has a rule, some planes are ruled by less then a Demon Lord and some Demon Lords rule more then one plane.

Easy to imagine there are a few open holes for future plot lines as well. I have also always had the opinion there are not 666 planes but rather infinite in number, which could also mean there are "enough" planes that the forces of chaos have created. After all it wouldn't be chaos if it was a stead fast number now would it?

And clearly Lolth is disqualified from receiving any votes, given that she isn't an actual demon lord, just a fallen deity and gothy ex-girlfriend of Corellon Larethian.

LOL

Gothy or pyscho EMO ex-girlfriend willing to tap dark forces to get revenge....

I'm on the fence about Lolth. Back in 1st ed, I considered her both a goddess and a demon lord, but I'd say since 3rd edition, she's become a deity only....which IMHO is a step down.

Officialness be damned, too—Shax from Erik Mona's Armies of the Abyss is one of my favorite demon lords, and his cult is just the right blend of creepy and insidious for me.
:uhoh: Huh. I was reading up on Shax in particular - plus some other BoF goodness (evilness, perhaps) - just last night, the better to mess with players' heads in an ongoing fiend-heavy campaign. Definitely a good one, that.

It was great, re-reading some of the Abyssal entries - I was impressed all over again by the writing, and the presentation.

It's hard to top Book of Fiends in a fiend heavy campaign. I'd almost consider it required reading just to ante up and get your game on the table. :)

After running Demon God's Fane and developed him a lot I'm partial to Ochremechk the Demon God, who I built up as a big disease and bug portfolio in addition to Chaos and Destruction.

FIFY. Nothing was cool in H4. Not even Orcus. Let's all agree to never mention it again. It doesn't exist.

Eh. It was cool once you got over the 100th level characters option.

... okay, never mind. Selective lobotomy here we go.

At least the Demon Lords that appeared in Dragon are doing ok...not as great as some of the bigger names...(Orcus, Graz'zt, etc...)

Here are the ones from the Demonomicon of Iggwilv articles:

#341 Baphomet 31
#349 Dagon 37
#357 Demogorgon 62
#333 Fraz-Urb'lu 27
#345 Kostchtchie 17
#353 Malcanthet 25
#329 Pazuzu 36
#337 Zuggtmoy 26

Kostchtchie is squeaking by....too bad, I like him so much after his DoI write up.

And I liked the Zuggtmoy article as well. I got over exposure to her from ToEE, but that article won me back to her.

Pazuzu...before his DoI article I used him mostly in my Sumerian settings...now, I love the obyrith aspect to him that he converted....He makes such an interesting bridge...political as well as subtype wise...

Going with Graz'zt and Orcus here.

Graz'zt rules three whole layers of the Abyss. At once. And he's just cool.

Orcus. Yeah, that's all that needs to be said. Orcus rocks.

No vote for Demogorgon. I'm rooting for the better Lords. :]

As for the others, Zuggutmoy and Juiblex are okay, but not as cool as Graz'zt and Orcus, don't care about the rest, and I've always used Lolth as a full-blown goddess.
