RPG Crowdfunding News 058: Redshirts, Lion’s Vault, The Mysterious Happenings at Furlong Down, The D

Welcome back to our weekly look at tabletop roleplaying game, and accessories, crowdfunding roundup! Each week we’ll be looking at a few campaigns currently running that have caught our eye as well as occasionally speaking to some of the creators about their campaigns, or looking at some of the ‘behind the scenes’ business aspects of putting together, launching, operating and then delivering a crowdfunded project. If you have anything you’d like us to cover, or questions about anything we talk about, please don’t hesitate to leave a comment or contact me directly.

Media 101: Laying The Groundwork

Gaming has been growing again over the last few years. You can see it in the heightened sales for Wizards of the Coasts' latest edition of Dungeons & Dragons. You can see it in million dollar tabletop role-playing game Kickstarter projects like 7th Sea. You can see it in the increased attendance at events like Gen Con. The trouble is that outside of luck and hope, you still don't see a lot of coordinated effort on the part of RPG publishers or event organizers to elevated their profiles in the public, or within their share of the market. I'm not just talking about just marketing and publicity, although both of those are important to this overall conversation, but I am saying that those who consider themselves to be the tabletop role-playing game industry (as well as those hobbyists who want to jump to that next level) need to be a lot more media savvy than they currently are.

August Modiphius Roundup

Modiphius Entertainment has been none-too-bashful about converting some of the entertainment industries most iconic intellectual properties (IPs), for the love of RPGs. From H.P. Lovecraft's mythos crafted into multiple ENnie award winner -Achtung! Cthulhu (2013), and Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian, to CONAN - Adventures In An Age Undreamed Of (Kickstarter, currently mid fulfillment), the company is certainly on the up take.

(KS) All for One: Satan’s Playground – Roleplaying in the aftermath of an alternate Thirty Years’ Wa

Triple Ace Games return to their Ubiquity powered All For One RPG for their latest Kickstarter campaign… and their twentieth campaign on Kickstarter! Satans’s Playground is set in an alternate history in which the supernatural is very real during the aftermath of the Thirty Years; War.

(KS) Jump in your Starfighter for Era: Balam – A Project Of Earth for Savage Worlds, FATE & Era d10

Kickstarter have launched a Project Of Earth initiative to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Voyager probes. Shades of Vengeance have taken the idea of what might happen when a probe is picked up by an alien civilization. What’s their reaction and how do they respond. The bad news for us is it looks like they invade in Shades of Vengeance’s Era: Balam. The good news is that Shades of Vengeance are not only releasing Era: Balam in their signature Era d10 system but also for FATE and Savage Worlds.

Expanded Masks of Nyarlathotep Coming from Chaosium

Fresh from winning a whopping ten ENnies (7 Gold, 3 Silver) Chaosium have announced that they are doing to be producing a brand new revised and updated edition of Masks of Nyarlathotep, their globe spanning classic campaign set in 1925. Plus it’s becoming even more globe-spanning with the inclusion of a brand new chapter set in Peru.

RPG Crate Unboxing: Mythoard #30

This latest RPG crate shows promise but there are a few missteps in execution. I'd like to see the scroll without rules on it so it can be used in any version of D&D, less artwork that I could easily print myself, and props that you can actually wear.

Journey to... Central & Western Africa

Africa is a rich land with a history that spans the entirety of human civilization. Trying to pin down a distinct set of myths would be difficult because one could end up repeating oneself in theme if not in actual specific characters. Still, the theme of the African myths is rich with heroes of a more classic nature and tricksters abound to delight and frustrate us. In many ways they are simpler than many European myths, but the simplicity does not detract from the depth and beauty nor their utility in adventure and world building.
