Yeah, seems like warforged are out.. I think it was Rich Baker who said that the all races in the phb, will also be part the forgotten realms setting (something about the core books, really being 'core' and everything from them would work in the various settings, I assume that means everything except the deities), but he also said that he could promise that there would be no warforged in the realms.

I'm wondering about that playtest though, where one of the players were of a race that apparently, in some shape or form, controlled an 'empire' (which some of them perceived as sort off despotic.. But it was perceived as such, entirely on account of the DMs campaign setup, rather than any official material). Which races could feasibly control empire (make warships and so on)? I dont buy goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears or even orcs in that role (maybe, orcs I guess). Atleast, it would be a kinda wierd gameworld, from my perspective :) but I guess if Minotaurs can do it, anyone can :)

I'm thinking some sort of dragon people, or maybe something shadowy.. From the new cosmology we've got the thiefling from the elemental chaos place (or astral sea, I guess), eladrins who are astral sea'ish, elves who are feywild'ish, but doesnt seem to be anything connected to the shadowfell? I dunno.

In Eberron, the goblinoid races controlled a vast empire that was only brought down by an extra-planar conflict. Now I don't know that they were able to make warships and such. I imagine it would be much like the Roman empire, with current day Eberron closer to the Renaissance period. Except the romans weren't attacked by nasty things with tentacles. :P

The note about organizing into an Empire seems to exclude most if not all of the Eberron races- the whole point of Changelings is that they don't form collective groups.

There's a lot of talk about Drow and the half-dozen other Elf-ish types, but what of their darker Dwarven cousins? I buy Derro or Duerger fleets as much as I do Orc.

My money's still on Hobgoblin, but I'd prefer an evil Dwarf to another Elf

Wait, you mean there are no Gnomes. Man did I miss that news :\

Back in the day we had the much maligned Half-Ogre make an appearance in 1st Ed. (Sorry if someone has already mentioned this). My money is on them making a resurgence. They fill the big dumb critter role.

Totally - I think that would make the ideal "Hulk smash!" race for the PHB I.

I'd like to get away from the Tolkien inspired Orc.

…And those pesky halfings.

But I would still like my garden/lawn dwellers!

Dragonborn.

Probably not but they would imo be a good addition. And with Bahamut being more prominent in 4e than in the past why not?
