D&D 4E The 4e Mystery Race is going to be...

After putting on my thinking cap and grabbing a cup of coffee, here's a recap of the races I have played:

elf - 9 (including 2 drow, 1 sea elf, and 1 wild elf)
1/2 elf - 4
human - 2
halfling - 2
gnome - 1
miscellaneous - 5 (dryad, atomie, half-ogre, juju zombie, minotaur)

Most of my players have gone with human, elf, 1/2 elf, or dwarf. In the 2E days it seemed like everyone wanted to play the 1/2 Elf!

But I have had a few play 1/2 Orcs and haflings.

But never a gnome. :( Poor gnomes.

Totally, I've not had the chance to be a player much in my 20 years with this game, but the few times I have been a player (only in 1st and 2nd edition), 4 out of my 7 characters or whatever have been half-elves.

In my 20 years as a DM, I've rarely, rarely seen people wanting to play a half-orc, gnome, or halfling (never seen anyone come close to touching one of these dudes), most of the time it's your human, elf, dwarf, and maybe the occasional odd-ball (aasimar, minotaur, centaur etc).
That's interesting. Just shows that everyone's experience is different.

In my 25+ years of playing, we've seen the majority humans, but there have been an equal number Dwarves, Halflings (more like hobbits than kender), 1/2 elves, 1/2 orcs, Drow and half-dragons. We also have had a half-ogre be a major character (15+ years running), a half-giant, a pixie, and only one or two elves. Actually I would say that Halflings and Dwarves number the most for PCs, in equal numbers. There has been a halfling in each of my past three campaigns, all played by different people, in totally different groups.

The party for which I am currently DMing consists of:

sahuagin
half-hag oceanid *
half-vampire sea elf
half-fey sea elf
warforged
mermaid

* -Daughter of a salt hag and triton. Salt hags are the daughters of night hags and sea elves. The beldamei, or half-hag is the daughter of a hag and non-outsider father. The template must be "awakened" by the onset of demon fever.

I sense…liquid?

Okay, if we're going to get into that game, the Planescape party I'm currently DMing for consists of:

-Human

-Half-Celestial Human

-Half-Orc (first time!)

-Drow

-Dwarf

I take it, this is a vast overland wilderness adventure? :p

I never said it was evidence; I said "In my 20 years as a DM…" stop trying to imply something that wasn't there just so you can be snide and try to feel good about yourself.

I would never use a discussion on races and previous experience and how it relates to the broader use of races in D&D as a means of making myself feel good, nor was I trying to be snide though implication.

You made a statement about your twenty years of experience as a DM and the choices your players made with races. I assumed, perhaps incorrectly, that you brought this up in an attempt to question how valid or useful those races were, hence my response.

I can of course understand that, because this is the internets and all, I may have come across as a jerk, so I'm sorry you read it that way.

Cheers,
Cam

Me too, I apologize for being so brash.

…Yes, the Internet, where inflection and tone are often lost!
