What'd he get wrong?

He can't use an implement with his Wizard powers, unless he takes Spiral Tower, or drops his shield; his one remaining Fighter at-will is Tide of Iron, so take a guess what he does regarding a shield.

He can't take Paragon multi-classing and also Spiral Tower.

He can't make use of Spiral Tower with a Bastard Sword.

Or sheathes the sword and then draws an implement... with Quick Draw you can even your sword back out in time for opportunity attacks.
