Will the real 4E please stand up?

Don't forget: "It's fun!!1!one1!! And other editions weren't as fun!11!!!1one11!"

(pretty much an exact quote from the 'Wizards Presents' booklets)

No body know better then me all their promises....I think, in terms of improving game play, they pretty much lived up to them (as much as they could).

But, no, 4E has not created anything quite like, say, the Ilse of Dread.

EDIT: which of course is mentioned in one of the preview books. That means something.

Exactly. Who said D&D needed or could possibly have a spiritual successor at all?

If I'm remembering correctly, Gygax did. And he basically said it was Castles & Crusades. Hence Gygax finally releasing Castle Grey... I mean Castle Zagyg, for the Castles & Crusades rules.

Of course, we are just talking about a game. I'll play any edition of D&D, although I'll only DM Classic D&D (especially Rules Cyclopedia), 1st Edition AD&D, or C&C. Currently I'm playing in a 4th Edition campaign, but I'm running a C&C campaign. IMHO 4th Edition's not so bad once you stop wanting it to be like the old D&D, and just accept it for what it is - a fun miniatures game that happens to have the D&D name.

The true D&D?

I would say whichever edition sells more. Simple as that.

This is the VHS vs Beta
PS1 vs Dreamcast
Subway vs Quiznos

Also:

IBL.

That wasn't really the question. One product being more successful than another has a lot more to do with branding and marketing than being a more natural extension of the rules and feel of what came before.

And at the risk of asking a dumb question, what's IBL?

Especially considering that Beta was much better than VHS and was commercially doomed when pornography adopted VHS.

In Before the Lock... meaning that in the poster's opinion a contentious thread might soon be locked.

I disagree with this post 4e is the funnest version of dnd yet with the best out of combat mechanics of any eddition, actual rules for gaining xp from skill usage. It is far from a minature game. If your not rping then that is your problem not the systems. Personally I will not play another version of dnd, other games yes, other versions of dnd no.

To me 4e is not D&D. 3.0 and 3.5 were stilld d&d, C&C feels like d&d. Pathfinder feels like d&d. 4E has lost the soul of d&d and so while may be fun it's like that cheesy kid in the elf costume at Christmas, he has the name, plays the part but never really lives up to the name.
