DM or Player?

Pre 4E 85% DM 15% player in 25 years of DnDing.

Post 4E 100% player my group switched and I'm along for the ride. (My swordmage is fun)

Needs a "both" option.

I voted "DM" as that what I'm doing more of right now, but a year ago I'd have voted "player". 2 years ago it'd have been "DM" again.

And yes, I freely admit I run games I'd like to play in; in large part because if I didn't want to play in it then by extension I most likely don't want to run it either. :)

I was always a player until 4e. The local store had an overflow of players without a DM to take the second group ... so I stepped up. Even with a GM-played PC in the group to keep track of (to keep it at 5, and make sure they have a leader) it's very easy to DM. I haven't gotten past running modules yet.

Ultimately, I rather put for focus into the single PC and his roll in the party, etc. I'd like to be as good of a DM as some of my DMs have been ... but I don't really have the time to create a ton of NPCs that may or may not pop up in game ... then again I may just eventually get all my previous PCs together and use them to start populating an area, if only to amuse myself.

While I am a PC pulled into the DM role ... it's honestly not outside my realm of experience ... back when I was in high school I did online roleplay wrestling and ended up taking over as the GM there at some point as well.

Absolutely a player first, but a pretty good DM too. I like both, but am of the opinion that what most DMs want out of a game are player wants, not intentions a DM should ever follow. That DMs are making their games worse by running games they would prefer to play in vs. what the actual players want to play in is a widespread problem.

I'm going to agree and disagree. I agree that the players should be enjoying the game. However, I think the DM should find players whose wants and play style are similar to their own, because, if the DM is not enjoying what they are running, the game is going to become a chore. Plus, imo, individual player wants are not always best for the game as a whole.

I'm both, DMing one game and playing in two others. I chose "DM" on the poll.

"Prefer" isn't exactly the word I'd choose. The truth is, I'm a little bit of a control freak, and if I didn't DM, the tendency to wrestle for control of a game would express a lot more in the games in which I'm a player, and neither I nor the other players and DMs would appreciate that.

If you really pressed me, I prefer to be a player, simply because I'm epically lazy and DMing is a lot more work.
