Playing THIS with THAT. . .

I used Chapter 4: Roots and Branches from nWoD's Ghost Stories in a Dark Pulp d20 Modern homebrew I called Arcadia. The only significant change I made, other than the mechanics, was to move the story to the 1930s and gave the PCs a reason to investigate beyond just the odd things that happened to them. They were potential members of the Zenith Foundation and were directed to the park in the story as kind of an intiation test. One of the players kept an in character journal of the adventures that you can download in pdf form here. The one in question is under "En Arcadia Est" - Adventure Logs (written by Donna K. Fitch as Drake Corrigan): Adventure Log 1.

This was really no trouble to run at all. The nWoD adventures are primarilly story related text with good suggestions about what to do if the PCs do X or Y and conversion of neccessary NPCs and critters aren't that difficult to whatever chosen system you might like.

So. . . so you ever play THIS with THAT games?

Isn't this the core motivating force for those game tweakers (or what I think of as the "real" hobby/DIY side of playing rpgs) out there? Bashing something you like into a "better" framework?

Although I suppose it also doesn't have to be done from the perspective of "improving" the game/gameplay but can be done just for the reason of, "I wonder how this would work...".

Well, I'm not sure that it'll count for much but starting Sunday I'll be running Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (AD&D version) using my modified Everstone.

After that... well, I've got _plans) on things to run, but haven't had a chance to actually do them yet.

I think Tomb of Horrors using either Donjon or PDQ (Questers of the Middle Realms) will be interesting. I've really wanted to pull an iconic module (Ravenloft/Tomb/whatever) and run it using one of those two systems. It could be played for laughs I guess (comedy being an element of both) but I'm much more interested in a "straight up" experience.

I thought about using M&M (1st Ed) for doing a fantasy game, and maybe slimming down M&M a bit. But it seemed like it'd be kinda like BESMd20 in a number of respects, so I didn't really go anywhere with this. I've been intrigued with the idea of Supers and Fantasy/D&D, but it kinda seems like D&D has been that way for a while. These larger than life critters show up and start terrorizing a bunch of hapless villagers, and then the heroes show up and issue some smackdown. I picked up Providence (XID/Hubris) a while ago and think there's some good possibilities there though. It's more the fantasy/supers blend than D&D/supers blend. I'm not really liking the system though, so I'd probably toss that and go with Truth&Justice for it.

I think that Monsters and Other Childish Things would be an interesting way to power a Mecha game. I haven't read the whole thing yet, so my thoughts are still pretty vague on that front.

I like a number of things about Star Wars, although you really couldn't call me a "fan" of it. I found the original movies entertaining, and the other movies were... well, they were what they were. But I've been thinking that Qin: Warring States would be an interesting way to run a Jedi game. I also think Fireborn would be an interesting thing to try for a Jedi game, but since it's an actiony system to begin with, it wouldn't really be such a hard stretch.

I'd really like to do something with Battlelords of the 23rd Century. As usual, I looked at the system and thought "Blech", but really like the setting. The cheerful brutality of it all and the gun porn... it just looks like a lot of fun. I've thought about The Shadows of Yesterday for this one.

I also _really_ want to run Rifts, either using Spirit of the Century, or Truth & Justice. Taking it into Unisystem might be fun too. I'd go with Angel rules for that, and maybe toss in some Armageddon too.

Nightbane/Nightspawn using Unisystem isn't a stretch at all. Nightbane setting, with some bits from Angel and Armageddon, and you've got all kinds of monster win happening there.

Is this the sort of thing you're thinking of? I wish I had more "I did this..." instead of "I want to do this", but out of the group I've got, my wife is the only one that's up for anything other than d20/White Wolf games. We're looking at moving to NZ though (hopefully they approve our visa) and I've got hope at being able to scare up some more open-minded folks out there.

In particular, let's take your claim that D&D is hardwired towards meeting problems with violence.

You absolutely cannot say that that is part of the system.
In the interest of not derailing the thread, I think we need to just agree to disagree, 'cause I ain't buyin' it. :)

I've also been thinking about a superhero game set in a D&Dverse...
I've been toying with the idea of a Justice League: Sharn game. "Superman" is a big honkin' warforged (a man of steel!), "Wonder Woman" is an aasimar paladin, "Batman" an urban ranger, etc, etc.

Also, yes. M&M for Harn is on the agenda.

Since M&M will model low levels of power elegantly, I think that this will probably work. I used M&M 1e as a generic 'tool kit' system for a few years (never ran 'supers' once with it).

After recently reading the Marvel Zombies and C-13, however, I'm tempted to try running a supers game in that alternate Colonial America. . . with zombies! I'm torn between using M&M 1e or SAS, though.
