What Systems Exist These Days?

Scribble

First Post
Back in my heyday like 14-18 or so I probably could have answered this on my own... But now I only know mostly the big names...

d20
GURPS
Word of Darkness
Rifts
Call of Cthulu?

I know there are more right?

I guess I should also count the various d20 spinoffs as seperate systems though huh?

You might want to have a look here for starters. Or there's the pen&paper site, which might still be updated with lists along those lines. No doubt there are others too.

Anyway, long story short, there are a lot of systems. Even just counting those currently in production, being supported, whatever. Especially if you include the PDF-only market. Yeesh, there are a lot.

And yes, those spinoffs you refer to should count, because they are often rather different, and cater to - in some cases - separate markets.

Well going by the list Aus_Snow provided there is 562 game systems can I just say, holy :):):):) lots!!!

I myself only currently use 3:

D&D 4e - d20
WoD - Storytelling
Cthulhutech - Framework

I guess I should have added I meant "currently in production."

What I would love to see is a category system of sorts. Though a while back I posted such a question elsewhere and was warned that it was an opening a can of worms. I guess its a very dangerous subject.

Its too bad as I would love to see something like:

D20
Storyteller
D6
FUDGE
ORE
D&D 4e
GURPS
Palladium

etc...then with snippets of information giving a synopsis of each of those systems and what their key elements are.

Well, I know that Jeff Dee is still doing Living Legends, and Battlefield Press has the Core Rules, if I am not mistaken. Tabletop Adventures has their Against The Darkness game, and 93 Games Studio has Twilight: 2013. I am sure there are some more out there, but those are ones I know personally. Oh, yeah, Aces and Eights, can't forget that.

Currently on my Amazon wish list are...

  • BRP
  • Labyrinth Lord
  • Dragon Warriors
  • Hero
  • Mongoose Traveller
  • Fudge

And I’m pretty picky even when it comes to other people’s money. I’m still tempted to put Feng Shui and T&T on there. (Feng Shui is still in-print, right?) Could probably come up with some others if I tried. Heck, didn’t even try and Trollbabe and AFMBE came to mind.

That I own and (I believe) are still in-print...

  • D&D
  • True20
  • Star Wars d20
  • Eldritch
  • C&C
  • Pendragon
  • GURPS

Some I’m not sure about: Toon, Ars Magica, Dying Earth, Rolemaster.

Add the out-of-print stuff that is readily available second-hand and the cream of the free crop, and there’s a lot out there.

By "system," would you mean...what?

A conflict resolution system? (in which case 3e and 4e and all d20 games and even d20-derived games like M&M or T20 are probably the same system)

A specific "core book"? (In which case every WoD faction is a different system)

A combat system? (4e and, say, FFZ, are different systems in this view)

A separate "game"? (so all WoD factions are one game, but Star Wars Saga and Star Wars d20 are different games)

I mean, it's a fiddly bit, that definition....

Ars Magica had a new supplement last week, Hedge Magic. I haven't seen anything in print for Toon for a long time. I'm not too sure what is/isn't happening with Rolemaster or Dying Earth.

Don't forget about Savage Worlds, Shadowrun, Runequest, L5R, d6, Warhammer and Dark Heresy. All have these have had new print releases within the past couple months.
