The Day The Earth Stood Still

AMC was showing the original last night. Very good movie; I'd never seen it. I enjoyed it quite a it bit more than I thought I would; I was expecting a very cheezy movie, but it wasn't (other than a couple of scenes).

I'm torn between my wish to support Jennifer Connelly projects and my dislike for Keanu Reeves. Aren't the big effects they use, the ones where things just fly apart, much the same as those used in the third X-Men movie?

As I understand, it's the same old chestnut of godlike beings damning mankind for its various shortcomings, but then when one of the godlike beings get to know one of us, some redeeming quality is found and we're given a second chance. We've seen that again and again, in fantasy, in sci-fi, in TV, in film...Trite stuff.

So, are you saying this is not a remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still but The 5th Element. :D

You know.... I seriously want to see a movie where this trope is reversed. A movie where humans travel to another Star System and get all preachy about [ISSUE X] only to discover that there is no redeeming quality in the race we want to obliterate. THEN when we try to nuke their planet, they end up fending us off (since *TWIST* they were an ancient space faring civilization) before deciding to go exterminate humanity because proselytism was outlawed in on their planet eons ago.

Heh. The Fifth Element is way too recent for that hackneyed plot. You gotta at least back to the original Star Trek.

Well, I thought "Forbidden Planet" might qualify as turning this particular cliche on its ear. We find this fantastic ancient technology left behind by a supposedly superior race, only to find out that they doomed themselves because ultimately they couldn't evolve past basic, primal emotions like hate and jealousy.

Speaking as a lifelong science fiction fan, the combination of trite story, wooden acting, and copious special effects frequently proves to be an irresistible combination.... (I kinda want to see it).

Though I am very disappointed --and hardly surprised-- they toned down the Space Jesus aspect of the original.
