Not surprising but I'm still going to go see it.Well? Not looking good so far with 22% at Rotten Tomatoes...
As I understand, it's the same old chestnut of godlike beings damning mankind for its various shortcomings, but then when one of the godlike beings get to know one of us, some redeeming quality is found and we're given a second chance. We've seen that again and again, in fantasy, in sci-fi, in TV, in film...Trite stuff.
Heh. The Fifth Element is way too recent for that hackneyed plot. You gotta at least back to the original Star Trek. So, are you saying this is not a remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still but The 5th Element.![]()
Well, I thought "Forbidden Planet" might qualify as turning this particular cliche on its ear. We find this fantastic ancient technology left behind by a supposedly superior race, only to find out that they doomed themselves because ultimately they couldn't evolve past basic, primal emotions like hate and jealousy. You know.... I seriously want to see a movie where this trope is reversed. A movie where humans travel to another Star System and get all preachy about [ISSUE X] only to discover that there is no redeeming quality in the race we want to obliterate. THEN when we try to nuke their planet, they end up fending us off (since *TWIST* they were an ancient space faring civilization) before deciding to go exterminate humanity because proselytism was outlawed in on their planet eons ago.
