I think it's kind of telling that the 1st ed DMG has the words "Must", "Dice", "Random" and "Chance" present fairly prominently.

Well, I'm also seeing an "Artifi" and a "benefi" at the far right, and a "fl" at the left. I suspect there is a problem in the source text with that.

Here is the answer.

Most likely the source is a scanned, OCR PDF. The pages were scanned and then character-mapped. Because of this, certain words get broken into multiple syllables, often after a specific letter (in this case, the letter i). So many words that have an "i" in it break the next letter with a space, causing the program to read it as two (or more) seperate "words" as opposed to the correct word.

Artifi cer, benefi t, and fi ght, fi ghter, and fi ghting probably account for these oddities. If someone went through the source and proofed for these broken words, the result would be more accurate, but very time consuming.

I'm fairly certain Acrobat is breaking words whenever it encounters a ligature character such as fi or fl.
