Maybe he was a pirate at one time, but Vecna has always been a master of the dark arts. In fact, if you do a little fact checking, I think you will find Vecna is still around after all these eons. Still manipulating from behind the scenes.

The Goblins' Guerilla Commandos Marching Song
Underground, never found, silent, unseen,
The Goblins' Guerilla Commandos are mean.
Making good use of the loot that we grab,
From the adventuresome Humies we scrag.
Killing elves is so fun,
We can't remember a day when it wasn't a great pastime.
But we're not that fussy.
Slice up some halflings and gnomes, then we'll kill da Humies!
Goblins are awesome, our brains are so keen,
Goblins are wily and goblins are lean.
Underground, never found, silent, unseen,
The Goblins' Guerilla Commandos are mean.
People don't notice us 'til it's too late,
Under their noses we'll pillage and burn.
We sneak through the night and we sleep through the day,
Looking for treasure 'cause we don't get paid.
We're so incredibly, utterly devious
Making the most of everything.
Even needles and pins.
Pick up the pieces and make them into something vile,

4d20+7 years ago* the Creators brought forth on thiscontinent world a new nation game, conceived in imagination, and dedicated to the proposition that sitting around a table, rolling dice, and pretending to be a fantasy character is a pretty good way to spend your leisure time.
Now we are engaged in a greatcivil edition war, testing whether that game, or any game, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war...
I have a dream that one day thisnation message board will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that sitting around a table, rolling dice, and pretending to be a fantasy character is a pretty good way to spend your leisure time."
