Dangerous Delves Preview 6: Goblins, Golem, Troll and Vecna!

That cover is awesome, as is the 4E art. The mini just misses the mark for me - maybe in person it will look better.

Vecna is a dark, evil god, purple and gold are not scary, dark colors for me (maybe because I'm a MN Vikings' fan?).

It does look a far distant reference... and about color scheme... please, make a poll, I'm under impression the majority of people seems to like darker or more *realistic* color schemes. Not to mention the cartoonish style who's turning frightening monsters on scooby doo monsters... :)

I kind of like the goblin pack-mule. Those are the kind of minis I build character ideas from. The Aspect of Vecna, on the other hand, looks like utter garbage.

The art reference was a Dragon cover. The color scheme was based more on the Miniatures Handbook art. Sorry everybody hates it.

I have an honest question for you, no snark or ill-will intended:

What do you guys at WoTC think of that mini? I mean, did you guys look at the finished mini and like it?

I guess I just have a hard time believing that you guys aren't just as disappointed at how some of those come out as we are. I know you can't talk bad about your own product, but please tell me that's not a mini that you guys were satisfied with.

Actually, after seeing the original reference, it makes me think the mini might be salvageable. The painting is done from a very different angle, so it's possible that the pose just looks bad from an eye-level shot - on the desk, it might be better. With a bit of luck... it might be a decent sculpt and pose.

The colours though... really need to match the colours on the Dragon cover, the combination of skin, violet and gold neither matches the reference, nor Vecna's description.

Cheers, LT.

"I won't deny because my hips don't lie!"

I LOLed! hard. It looks smiling to me.. i can even hear the drumms..

but somehow i liked the mini..

IF, it was not a rare (real crap rare) .. i could use it in some ways.. like a undead belly-dancer in Al-Quadin or a Undead Djinn ..

Anyway.. better luck next one.

That's what i was thinking, it might be salvageable. Some ink here, a touch up there, maybe shift an arm a different direction. I'd really have to see it in person though, but yeah, it looks like an emaciated bellydancer in the picture. Which i guess could be scary in a very specific adventure. ;)

I will definitely use the goblin mini for Splug from Keep on the Shadowfell. He is still with my party and it will be nice to have a mini that isn't combat oriented to represent the little guy.

Vecna. Oh....Vecna. The Dragon cover was great. The mini didn't capture that look. And that is the problem with minis. If it isn't done exactly right it can come off silly as opposed to fantastic. Maybe a repaint will help. I don't know.

The Dragon cover has motion. Part of that comes from the angle. Vecna is coming straight at you in that piece, which means the out swung hips aren't as silly looking. In fact, the design causes your eyes to slide in a fluid motion to the face and hands. It also does a good job with the mood by establishing a darker color scheme. Finally, the piece provides a boundary for our eyes. When you reach the end of the piece your eyes bounce towards the center and follow the flow of motion back to the focus of the piece. These are the reasons why the mini doesn't covey the same sense as the art. You simply cannot recreate that image as easily in a format that is naturally static and allows "all around views".

The Open Grave art is amazing. That would have made an fantastic sculpt for an Aspect of Vecna. The stance is perfect and it would easily provide something interesting to look at from all angles.

I like the golem, but I am not sure how I feel about the melting effect. I like it, but I have this "old school" tickle in the back of brain rejecting it. But I could definitely use it and I do think it is a nice sculpt for a golem. So I could get over my irrational first reaction. :)
