Post-apocalypse system

Neubert

First Post
I have offered my players to start a new post-apocalypse campaign, but I am not certain which system to use. I was hoping ENWorld might be able to aid me?

This is my second apocalypse game, I've run one before using the d20 Modern rules together with the d20 Apocalypse book, but we never used the rules for finding "parts" and building stuff with them, which was the reason I had chosen Modern in the first place.
I am assuming the players want to run something similar, which is a modern/present-time apocalypse, just after the event happened.

We would prefer a fairly rules light system (as neither I or my players wants to spend too long learning the rules).

There's Aftermath!

But the rules are not particularly "light".

It has also been out of print for quite awhile.

The system doesn't necessarily have to be developed with apocalyptic campaigns in mind, but any suggestion is good, so thanks! :)

Anyone else wanna weigh in?

How about Darwin's World? there is a d20 Modern version and a True20 Version.

Although there is a default setting for DW, it's more of a toolkit, you take and use whatever parts of it you like, futuristic weapons, robots, mutations, etc.

Most of their books are available in print form and if you buy directly from them you get the PDFs free, best deal in barter town.

Savage Worlds is my go-to recommendation right now, particularly when you're looking for simpler games that play quickly. Plus the $10 for the Explorer's Edition is hard to beat.

I'll also throw a plug in for Aftermath. Not so much the mechanics (unless you like a game where all of the wiring is exposed) but because it offers such a comprehensive overview of post-apoc gaming, including some great advice for designing campaigns.

Another vote for Savage Worlds. It handles a variety of settings and genres extremely well.

The d20 Apocalypse book is very good though. Definitely worth salvaging for ideas.

I'm not that fond of Aftermath! currently, because of the combat rules mostly. I thought I would enjoy playing it again after all these years, but it hasn't been the trip I was hoping for.

5 Truly Worthy Post-Apocalyptic RPGs « A character for every game

My recommendations are in there. In brief they are:

Twilight:2000
Living Steel
octaNe
Dark Sun
After the Bomb

For Gamma Wordliness, I recommend

Omega World
Mutant Future
Darwin's World

I love the supplements and the feel of aftermath!, I think I'm just burned out from having just played it for a while.

Agreed. I spent years tinkering with a homebrewed system based more on Daredevils and Bushido than Aftermath, but I've generally moved on to faster playing and more cinematic systems.

Interesting list by the way. Here's my five:

- Aftermath
- Morrow Project
- Redline
- Taiga
- octaNe
